I tried fishless cycle on my 10g and failed after weeks of dedication because I was using ammonia with a surfactant in it (dumb). Now I just started to fishless cycle my new 120g. I am using 'CLEAR AMMONIA' from Wal-Mart (great value brand), and it contains Soft Water, Ammonia, and Chelating Agent. I read that chelating agent seems to be some kind of enzyme or something, and I don't think I read anywhere that this is a detriment to fishless cycling (this is as close to pure 100% ammonia as I can find).

Anyway I found 3 capfuls of this stuff brings my tank to ~5ppm, so I've been adding that much every day since Saturday (it is Tuesday Night now and I've just added my 4th dose). After my 3rd dose I started to notice that the top water of my tank looks like oil does, a rainbow'y kind of oily glaze. Should I be concerned about this? I don't want to waste another few weeks, but I want to cycle this tank properly.

Thanks,
Robert

Actually an update here, I have gotten nitrites so I guess things are working! :) No, the ammonia does not suds or bubble at all. I guess it's okay. Also solved is the problem of the glaze on the top of my tank water -- i have an eheim external canister filter and I had the outspout completely submerged in my tank, I took it out so all the jets really agitate the water. It's a little noisier but it mixes the water up a lot better.
