What about one of those white, shell shaped vacation feeders that disolves over time? If you got a big one, it would be kind of a cheaper way than the automatic feeder wouldn't it? Just a suggestion.

Absolutely not; those 'vacation' feeders contain plaster. Tetra make one that has the food contained in (edible) gel; much better and less messy.

But still, the non plaster one would dissolve so that there would still be an ammonia source in the water while you were away but doing a fishless cycle, right?
