Depends on size of tank. Emperor tetras are pretty.

my tank is 36 inch by 15 by 16 high

i eventually want a betta

so some species that are compatible with a betta

i would also like som kissing guorami (dont know if thats spelt right but you get the idea)

a lot of people will tell you having a male betta in a community tank is a disaster waiting to happen.

You shouldn't keep any fin nippers or any brightly coloured fish with bettas. If they are bright the betta will attack them. If you have fin nippers they will nip the bettas fins.

I think if you are keeping a community tank and you want cool fish other than just your beta, leave the beta out. Get a little tank just for a beta if you want one very bad. Tiger barbs would be one of the worst things to throw in with a beta. That is a fin-less beta waiting to happen.

neon/cardinal/diamond head tetra gogogo :)

clown loaches grow to 12 inches a piece and need to be kept in a shoal so need a tank of at leat 75 - 100 gallons. pink kissing gouramis grow to 30 cm so again they are unsuitable, why not go for a smaller gourami - check out the gourami index in the anabantoid forum

hope this helps :D
