Hi guys, wonder if I can run this by you :)

I've got a 30L biOrb that I'm trying to cycle but nothing seems to be happening yet. I started 25th April by adding ammonia. I got my measurements all correct and it's sitting at around 5ppm. But it's been stuck there all week and I'm not sure if I'm doing something daft or just being impatient?

Current stats are as follows...

Temp : 26 C
pH : 8.4
Ammonia : 5ppm
Nitrite : 0ppm
Nitrate : 0ppm
Salinity is also spot on the marker.

Just another piece of info in case it's relevant...my tapwater is 7.4.

I added API Stress Coat + to the water and I'm using an API Master test kit.

Any ideas? :)

If you want to give it a kick start try and get some mature media, have a look at this link to see if anyone is near you.

It can take 2-3 weeks before your A-bacs start to colonize to process ammonia.

It seems you are doing everything you need to.

if it is heated turn the temp upto 28*c

you could always do a test and get some of that bacteria in a bottle and see if that helps

Right, 28-29 C/84 F is optimal for bacteria growth.

Ah yeah, should have said I'm going marine :)

I'll turn the temp up a little and see how we go. Just wanted to make sure I'd not done anything silly. Cheers guys.

Just another note, I'm looking to pop in a Fire Shrimp or two and either a couple of clown or humbugs. Ideally I'd like some of each but I don't think the tank is big enough.

I PM'd a Mod, to see if he can move it to the Marine section where you will get more advice on setting up a marine tank.

As I know Live Rock plays a huge part in the tanks biological filtration.

Seems there are two people in my town on the list...Braintree :D

Think I'll try this on my own though for the moment as I like to learn these things as I go :)
If I really start to struggle, I'll maybe give them a shout.

OK, cheers FHM :)

Looks like you landed in the right place. :hi: to the salty side of the hobby.

If you are looking to have a fish-only tank, you're going about it the right way, just be patient on that ammonia it'll come down. While waiting though, tell us a little bit about your plans here, 30L biorbs are shall we say restrictive as far as stocking options go...

:hi: to the salty side

You live fairly close to Trod and I :good:

Can we have a few more details:

Do you have lr
where did it come from if you do, is it cured or not
what are you plans

the plans you told us about are not good  you need to do some more research and ask questions -the only stupid question is the question not asked :good:

what tests have you got
what books have you got
what equipment do you have

enough with the questions and awaiting your answers

Hi Desmo,

I have temporarily moved your thread back to our 'New to the Hobby' section so you can post in it until you are validated.

Cheers

I appreciate they're not the best of tanks, but it was given to us by a family member who found it too big for their needs. We've added a few things like the heater, etc to go marine [:)]

We picked up some live rock last weekend from our lfs. It's cured. We only want to keep one or two fish and maybe a shrimp or two but not sure if that's too much for just a 30l tank. Using the API master test kit. No books here, just been reading various forums but mainly here.
