The other day I went to one of my favourite LPS and went straight to the fish section. I hadn't been there in a while and I was suprised when I saw that they had installed a tv and dvd player. It was playing a program about how to look after fish and stocking and stuff like that. I was even more suprised when it started talking about why it's important to cycle a fish tank, getting mature media and everything to do with cycling. It didn't say anything that I didn't already know as it was pretty basic, but I was pleased that the store was doing something to educate people about fish.

Does anyone else have LFS's with information dvds or any other good infomation source?

We have a TV *inside* a fish tank but it only plays a really uninformative DVD about marine fish food that no-one can hear because we don't turn the sound up. It's pretty rubbish.

We could get fired for mentioning a fishless cycle to a customer.

Really? That seems kinda harsh that you could get fired. But I guess the fish stores want peoples fish to die so they can make more money.

I don't know if it metioned fishless cycling itself, but it definately mentioned getting mature media. And it was really loud, easily able for anybody within a 8 metre distance to hear clearly.

I just thought it was a really good idea and wanted to share a positive thing about LFS, because most of the time we hear about how they have given us bad advice.

That would be a great idea, in fact it should be law :p But our local LFS' just sell people a brand new tank and at the same time they always try to make them buy fish. Its awful. Up until a couple of months back the tanks were in awful condition and so were the fish, but luckily when I went in the other day the tanks are now crystal clean, brand new and all the fish look healty.

I'd like to see more of these kind of DVDs or maybe just a book people can skim through before they buy their equipment in stores.

That has to be one of the single most insanely ridiculous things I've ever heard
. Get fired for telling people how to keep an animal correctly and give it the right conditons to live in?

I'd seriously question that, job or no job if it were me.

That's why I don't work at a major US chain store anymore (not about fishless cycling specifically, but a related issue.) I just couldn't bring myself to agree with their policies and as a hobbyist, I couldn't bring myself to do it.

I've never seen anything like that but it's an excellent idea. I hope it spreads to other lfs too. At least it would give people some notion about cycling and that's more than many folks have when they start into fishkeeping.

that could be interesting to do an experiment to see if all the new people who join what % of them new the very basics of good fishkeeping.
