Fish That Are Not Worth Buying.

Umm for me it would have to be catfish. I bought three once and never saw any off them and they ate all of the food before my other fish could get it. They even ate fish like 2/3 there size!

Awww, so many don't like guppies or danios, but I love mine! lol

I don't really like plecos.. of any sort. Even if I had a big enough tank to have one, I don't think I would. After I saw what a fullgrown one looks like, they're just creepy looking :p lol

Even pl*cos like this?

Neons I have never had a problem with, I dont find tetras particularly difficult to keep provided they are not added to new tanks and are not added to tanks that have other fish big enough to eat them.

I do agree with CAE's being useless

I'm going to stand up for the gups- particularly the females which I find very pleasant characters to have around. I've done well with the current batch, too, coming up for a year since I bought my two fully grown females, and they are still in excellent health, and their offspring is also healthy. But you do have to put in a lot of work to find a healthy source.

I find it quite hard to list a fish that isn't worth the money, as that sort of implies that you're keeping the fish for what you want it to be, rather than enjoying it for what it is. Having said that, there are of course plenty of fish that just don't do it for me. Fancy goldfish are probably top of the list. Fat and lots of useless appendages- it's not a combination that appeals. Also, bala sharks, pretty when they're little, but when they're grown, they just look like boring carps. Also not a tremendous fan of mbuna, though I think this is unfair; it's because I associate this sort of showy fish with the perfume counter of John Lewis!

But if I had to list one fish that IMO is not worth most people's money (including mine), it would have to be the Chinese Algae Eater. But then again, when RandomWiktor was on here posting about her CAE, I was always interested to read those posts. But not many people are going to find it worth their while to keep a tank just for a CAE, certainly not me.

I have to disagree about plecos being on this list.

Maybe it is here because most of the plecos sold in the LFS are commons or Gibbiceps that are tankbusters, but they don't all need huge tanks, as there are loads that are smaller and I have 4 of these which are 3 inches nose to tail and just about fuly grown (in a 125LTR/29USG)

Plecos are always worth buying (as long as you know how big it will grow and have the right tank

Sucking Loach.

If small fine but after a few inches you can watch them strip bare any fish you have got in the tank. Many shops refuse to sell them for that reason.
Nasty little critters.

And yes i am in the Anti guppy brigade.
I mean what are they all about?
Slow, No character, inter bred completely, die quick, and breed like rabbits where the fry get eaten anyway?
Apart from that they are OK :hyper:

And a great white shark?
Wreck your Tank
Swollow your Tank and PC
Eat the Kids for starters, mother-in-law main coarse, and the neigbour for desert.

Where can i get one :good:

For me its Polynemus threadfins and Agenieosus catfishes, no matter what i do i cannot keep them alive for longer than a few months before something has to go wrong and they die, wasting another hundred quid or so each time, for now ive completely given up with them until i can splash a bit more cash on some really specialist set ups for them.

I also find the typical small peacefull community fish to be extreemly boring and if it were ever a case that these were the only fish available i would sell my tanks and give up.

Have the latest batch of threadfins died CFC?

Mike

The latest couple of threadfins i bought died within two weeks, the first one to go wedged itself behind the filter overnight and presumably "drowned" and the second one went a couple of days after when my fishroom heater blew a fuse and its tank got too cold, i think im just destined not to actualy keep these fish :(

Thats crap, do you know of ANYONE whos kept them for a decent time in captivity? The prices are mad too...

Mike

I havent heard of anyone that has managed to keep them alive for the long term in a tank but the odd thing is they are captive bred and raised for the food industry so it cant be impossible. When my fishhouse is eventually built (god i need to win the lottery of have a rich relative die and leave me some cash) i will give them one more go in a big tank set up to replicate an esturine habitat with tidal flows and everything, but until then they are firmly off my fish list.

The color and markings are nice, it's just the way their body looks.. I dunno.. maybe it's their eyes or something but I just find them creepy :p I'm sure they're excellent fish, I just would never get any.

Most any livebearer except for sailfin mollies, balas (too big, need big groups, ugly when full grown), jelly bean parrot (long story  ), most tetras, CAE, angelfish (never had good luck with them), most crazy goldfish types, others that I have forgotten to mention....
