Fish Tank Set Up

It takes a lot more than 3 days to cycle, but if you take all the media (sponges etc) out of the old one and put them in the new it will support the same bioload.

When you change sponges how much of whats there do you replace? and how often? Sponges should not need replacing unless they are falling apart. Just rinse them in tank water from a water change

Well i dont see why i cant get a job in aquatics, im not going to let YOU try and put me down of an ambition of mine and do you want me to put a video of me measuring the tank? Ok and i understand the reason of cycling a fish tank ok as when you introduce a new filter into an established aquarium it will filter the fish waste but not the toxins so if you just started a fish tank youve added water filter etc. And you did a cycle with fish itll remove their waste but they could die of poisoning but i think its zebra danios that can survive but i wouldnt do it so if im wrong tell me as i can only learn

Erm it says change it every month but i clean it once every 2 weeks ive changed it once since i got it
And everything you said tizer ive done and it said replace the sponge every month but as i said before i clean it not replace it
Thanks see ya

I never said you wont get a job in aquatics full stop, i said you wont get a job in aquatics IF you dont understand they cycle process. Before you get into a huff, i suggest you read posts slowly and allow the information to sink in before you turn into a keyboard warrior. Instructions on the filters always tell you to replace the sponges every few weeks, ignore it.

most filter manufacturers say change the media every so often so they can sell more media. You don't need change it until its falling apart.

Its not so much the filter or tank that you cycle but the media inside the filter. That is where the bacteria that covert the toxins (Ammonia -> Nitrite -> Nitrate) live.

You have given a few bits around a fish-in cycle, which you are still in (I suggest you have a read of this thread to fully understand).

Were you aware of fish-less cycling as well?

Which i have learnt, a keyboard warrior ! and i do understand about cycling a tank and im not in a huff at all So maybe your the one whos getting in a 'huff' ok the plec is too big for the tank right i know now dont i but i know what to do with my tank Regarding water changes etc i also have ammonia breakdown but i dont use it as my ammonia is not high i say 0-0.25 as when i test it and look at the colour of the water and the card its difficult to say which one it is

Yes i was just using it as an example i fully understand how to cycle a tank i did not write everything i know cause it would of took ages i cant type fast on my ipod

I think you should be really careful how you respond because you are coming across as a petulant child.

Any ammonia reading above 0 is TOO HIGH.........period. 50% water change to get it back down immediately.

No pal i dont think now your just saying this because im 16 and you think i dont know as much as all of you guys which i may not big deal im not trying to argue with anyone but if you talk to me like a kid than ill respond like one and a 50% water change is not necessary i cant tell if its 0 or 0.25 on the card im comparing my water to thats all and what is this tizer on about

careful, complex words 'n' all, might need further explanation.

Indeed

Well make your mind up it's either 0 or 0.25!

Ok just done a test on ammonia
Yellow indicates 0
Anything green indicates 0.25 upwards
Im 120% sure it is yellow

Yes but on the card the colours are very similar but itd definately 0 now for sure! Lol

You cant be 120% sure its yellow, you can only be 100% sure. Oh look, i was being pedantic. doh! I think im going to go hide in another part of the forum. :|

Give the kid a break, guys? His last post was trying to be sensible, and this is supposed to be a friendly forum.

Try looking at your test reading outside in pure daylight - it can make a huge difference when checking against your colour chart and you might find that your ammonia actually is zero. Your tank looks fine on the vid to me, nice what you've done with the stuff you've got and great for barbs but as you know your plec has reached the point where he needs a bigger tank. My heart goes out to you, it's hard to say goodbye when you become attached to a pet fish, but it's for the best.
Anyways to try and answer your post about arranging your tank to make improvements. The barbs will like it as you already have it with open swimming space, but also like some secluded spots by way of rocks, driftwood (you can probably find this stuff for free) and also some plants. I'm new to plants, but recommend Java Fern. They are cheap, easy to grow and hard to kill! The great thing about them in my opinion is that they actually should'nt be planted in the gravel, so no worries about special substrate requirements. Instead you tie them to rocks or wood (use cotton thread). After a few weeks the thread dissolves and the roots will have attached themselves. You can transform the look of your tank this way.
Best of luck re-homing your plec, and have fun :)

Thanks guys and actually nice to know there are some supportive people on this forum

Tizer strikes me as a decent bloke, and knows his stuff when it comes to fishkeeping. His advice is worth listening to.
