i was looking at getting a new tank and couldn't beleave how much 5 peaces of glass was :S

:/ ....maybe look at it as a life support system for your fish..... ;)

It can be cheaper if you do alot of it yourself -

....or look second hand - you'd be surprised what you can pick up

.....but also bear in mind the old addage that you get what you pay for :/

:)

how come a 10 gallon tank cost $12(u.s.) but a 20 gallon cost almost $40???
and lets not even talk about larger tanks or stands!

The bigger the tank the thicker the glass has to be. Don't know for sure but that could be why the price jumps. If you think glass is bad price acrlic tanks.

they are a bit pricey.........and prices are rising

........at my lfs they wanted £295 for a juwel rio 180 with stand

i looked on the net n saw 1 for £265 so the guy said he'd match that price

looked some more n found 1 from a site that was last updated 2001 n they were £220

he wouldnt come that low tho

Tek :fish:

I think that prices are reasonable considering tanks last a lifetime and all you have to do is replace the silicone once or twice every 25-30 years.

Like mentioned, once you get above 100g or so you get thicker glass. My 135g custom tank I just bought has 5/8" thick glass.

True Jer, it is an expensive Hobby.

However, if you look at it like I do. My husband and I are allergic to pet dander and we can not get our children any dogs, cats, birds, gerbils, etc. We think of the fish as their pets in the future and starting them out young that only makes it more fun as they grow up and get to see the fish grow with them.

Tanks are expensive, but if you compare tanks to what you are putting in these tanks to enjoy them you are actually coming out cheaper by buying the tank once, you will spend more money on getting more inhabitants and more food then you are getting tanks. That is how I put it in prespective with my husband. :D

I think that tank prices are fine for now...but other pet products are way over priced! didnt you guys notice that? some chemicals you put in your tank is just way overpriced, i think, and so are some accesories(esp the plants, decor, and all those other stuff...

Fish keeping is a expensive hobby thats for sure, certainly not one for those with tight wallets.

the local glass store (an hour away, local :p ) sells glass real cheap, 5 pieces wouldn't much at all. I wonder how hard the are to make, probably pretty hard.
