i got a secondhand tank for 8 au dollars, you just have to clean them out really well and youre all set. garage sales are the best place to pick up a tank or the market, just make sure there isnt anything wrong with it and youre set, some people move on to bigger animals or dont have the money, time or effort for fish, buying through a g sale you can always barter the price down.
I think they should be cheaper. You must be mad (or more money than sense) to say they shouldn't. Although my tank was quite reasonable in comparison to those branded tanks like Juwel tanks (way to expensive IMO). My tank is a 48x18x21 and it was £60 from a shop that makes them up to order, any size you want. Like has already been said, its the kit that goes with it.
I was looking for at an external filter the other day for my tank and it was £50. thats almost the same as my tank cost, and the best of it is, all the brands just use cheap materials (Plastic and a bit of sponge oh and a magnet for the motor). It really hisses me off.

I would always Bye second hand. There is always someone that has bought a tank put fish in and they died. given up and then wanted to sell it cheap.
I managed to get a 20Gal, with stand, gravel, plants, rocks, heater, filter, light, canopy, books, food and chemicals for £30 (ebay) The whole lot would have cost the bloke I bought it from about £200. (the filter had a price label of £29).
Compared to everything else out there, they are pretty reasonably priced. I am suprised at how cheap some fish are. Cats and Dogs are becoming outrageous. Like $500-1000. Even $200.00 for a mutt cat or dog. Some fish live pretty long and are relatively cheap in comparison. Plus, they don't need shots and such. What I don't like is how expensive filters and lighting and decorations are or can be at certain places. That is where I think things can get out of control. I think stands can be expensive too, but I just bought a stand for my tv that cost 140.00 and my fish tank stand cost the same, but a tv weighs a lot less than an aquarium, so the fish tank stand has to be stronger, so I guess in comparison to other rip-offs out there, they are about right.
