Fish Suffering At School!

I am absolutey disgusted about this! The woman must be mad, if the fish body isn't even covered in water fully its obviously not big enough! I feel so annoyed that the fish are in this enviroment, its a hard situation though say you stole the fish or whatever she'd just buy more! But if you reported her then she may get banned from fish keeping for however long thats if you prove evidence of the living conditions, photos and shots of the fish bodies not fully covered.
My school keep fish, 3 big pond fish in what looks about a 10G tank its not ideal atall but compared to this situation those fish at my school live in a mansion.
Definetley report. By the sounds of it, you dotn have much time left these fish will die its almost certain so on wednesday if the fish are alive and this lady is in you HAVE to speak to her immediately and take action that day otherwise i think its going to be an unhappy ending, those fish deserve better :(

I will be more aggressive! I am not going to do my 10gal tank idea though because

1. While it is better than the puddle, it still isn't big enough.
2. I don't have a job or very much money.
3. These fish may die while cycling the tank. A fish-in cycle would be the only option.
4. There may be no room for a tank.
5. Summer vacation, who will watch it?

Take pictures of the fish without water, thn top up the water in the ''tank'' for them :) at least they will be in the right media [name?]

also, everyone knows fish must live in water :S So she makes the ''tank'' not even covering thm!!!

I don't have a good camera to take pictures of these fish. Just imagine a puddle of water 1in. deep, 6in by 6in wide, and 2 skittish fish barely able to move. I would top off the puddle but there may be chlorine in the water where the school is...

you dont have chlorine in your water? NICE :D

Goldfish are coldwater fish anyway why are we worring about cycling just get a fishbowl they cost like 10 bucks at walmart and all you have to do is change the water every week. I have a goldfish that has lived in a fishbowl for two years untill i got him a 5 gal tank and he is the happiest fish i know hes like a puppy with his tail wagging when he sees me come near the tank he's name is Moe fishy :D

Fish bowls are a huge NO NO!

They are way too small for goldfish!

Gold fish can get up to near two feet in length; yes, those little ones you see at walmart will get that big!

Also, the outside body of gold fish will grow accordingly to what size tank they are int, but their internals will not. So, if kept in a small tank for too long, their body will stop growing, but their internals will not. So in other words, they will kill them selves.

A gold fish should have at least 20 gallons to live in, if not 30 gallons, and another 10 gallons for every extra goldfish added!

As for cycling; if you have fish in a tank, your tank should be cycled, even if it is just a goldfish, no questions asked! Being that goldfish are cold water fish, that has nothing to do with weather their tank should be cycled or not. They still produce ammonia, and ammonia is poisonous to fish and will kill them if they are exposed to it for too long!

And the fish bowl, well that is a huge "goldfish" trend that should of stopped ages ago! Fish bowls are one of the worst things to keep fish in, especially a goldfish!

I would still report her to the aspca, you can do it anonymously, just say a couple of her students are concerned about the fish. They wont say who has reported it she will have to listen to them as she obviously wont listen to you. Do it NOW its the best thing to do for the fish!

I kept reporting my LFS they finally got closed down, they didnt know who reported them.

the point i was trying to get across was that right now those fish would be better off in any kind of bowl or box that they can swim around in, filter or not. if the person in that class room wants to save those fish they are gonna have to step up their game and make an aggresive move by bringing any kind of bowl or box and physcialy removing them from that turtle trap and if the teacher says anythng to them they say to her " send me to the principals office i dare you, i will tell the principal everythng you are doing to these fish " shes not going to want the principal to know what she has done so you have the upper hand

that statement is false and it does not happen...science has proven it, and nature wouldnt allow it!

a fancy gold fish should have atleast 20 gallons

a common goldfish should have a pond or atleast a 6*2*2 foot tank

I agree with truck, the internals couldnt possibly keep on growing, but for me its a case of swimming space, the goldfish will still reach a nice size and in a small tank wont have any room to swim, i would say fancy goldfish require more than 20gals though truck, they are quite messy and can get to 5"

Outside of this forum (and other similar ones) I don't know anyone who actually cares about fish to the level that we do. Surely if you reported her to the principal then he/she'd just say you were being silly and care just as little as she does.

A bowl is still unsuitable.... goldfish require a filter as they are VERY messy fish.
