Fish Seem Ill And Swimming At The Surface After Filter Change

I agree them nitrate sponges not proven if they work, expensive have to replace them every six weeks.
Only need black carbon to remove meds.
Buy some new blue sponges to replace them, but don't add them to the tank cycled.

i think im beign really dumb and now im embarassed, which filters should i have in my tank? at the mo the set up is:
white
black
green
course blue one
fine blue one

Make sure you top up your tank, I am very concerned that your heater will crack given your current water level.

Yeh i did this ages ago, as i thought the heater would do this, thanks for the concern

Take the black and green one out, it will just slow the cycle down, need to get the beneifical bacteria going in the blue sponges fast.

Black is carbon and is good for removing chemicals, ie meds from the water

The green is a nitrate removal sponge, although it is unsure if they work

Aaron

Keep the carbon, as they are good for removing left over meds after treating a tank, you shouldn't leave the meds in the water longer than required.

But bin the nitrate removal, I don't think they really work - I replaced mine as soon as I got my tank

bin and replace it with summi or just leave it?
what set up of filters have u now got? i'm lookin at the sand thinking how yuk it will be to mix up but i no i gotta do it dnt wanna loose my fishes x

Sorry you will have to bin the black carbon as well as once it drys out know good.
So wasted alot of money on them two sponges.

its still in the tank?
thanks for all ur help wilder.
arron if ur online wht did u put in place of them in ur juwel?

I just replaced my green and black filter cartridges with another course blue sponge - it works really well and is much cheaper! Good luck, hope you see some good results soon.

Don't need the Black
Don't need the Green

Replace them with fine Blues.

Only really need the black one to remove meds after treatment / clean the water.

Andy

so u never need to put the black one in? what bout tap safe n stuff like that?

You still use the water conditioner on every water change.
Only time you use black carbon is when you have used meds, the black carbon removes the med from the tank.

You use tap safe & stuff like that as a dechorinator: It removes the chlorine in tap water that wouild otherwise kill the filter bacteria!

It works almost immediately.

Andy
