Hello,

Some of ya'll have heard me talking about this on chat, but I have decided to make a post on this to see of anyone can answer my question.

Well, My plan, was to build an outdoor model railroad that goes all around the house and yard, I have all the plans and outlines for it all set up. What one of the highlights of this project, will be the train running on a bridge over the fish pond.

O.k, so here is where the fish come in. Obviously, some of the material that will make up this bridge is gonna go into the water. No, I don't want a suspention bridge cause it may wobble and if a 200 dollar train falls in the water, I am gonna flip. O.k, so, I was wondering what type of wood would be best used in the fish pond, that will not harm the fish, yet, not rot away from beneath causing the whole thing to collapse.

By the way, I want the bridge to look something like this. Bridge Idea

Alright, well, thanks for anyones help. I am serious with this wood thing. The pond BTW is gonna have goldfish or koi (such as all ponds).

Thanks!

The wood might snag the liner ,you would be better with a good strong suspension bridge,I've saw one over a pond like that with a train on. :)

you could just run a baton over the pond then mock it up as a bridge as id be wary of any sort of structure bearing weight resting on the liner ,you would have to use something that hasnt been treated with preservitive so that rules out pine
one option is to build the bridge then varnish it up with a yatch varnish before placing it in situ, mahogany is a good solid wood but would prove expensive ,reclaimed driftwood is another option cut to size and shaped but also expensive ,what sort of scale you working too ? length width etc,if the pond is sunk you could go for a bridge next to the pond instead of over it

I'd like that in our garden over a stream.

depending on your layout why not just use real railway slippers to go from 1 side of the pond to the other.

K, I need an actual railway bridge. I can't use anything curved because the tracks don't flex like that. I need something very sturdy and strong. So a piece of wood will not work out all that well. And I dunno about a suspention bridge. Saw a video on one that swayed like crazy in the wind and broke just like that. Somewhere in missouri or something. But I guess I can try. Scale is like, 1/25 or 1/30 or something like that. I dunno. Gotta look it up again.

New Jersey Transit did it in that one snap shot you saw there and I am sure it didn't kill none of the fish there. What do you suppose they used?

Would it be possible to use vinyl? In Southern California you can get decking, fences, trellis, etc. all made out of vinyl; surely that could be in the water? (Or would it leach some sort of nasty chemical? After all, many pondliners are made with vinyl...)
