I can't get my brain into gear with this one.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fish that fall under the criteria:

  • Small in size (around 1.5inches. No bigger than 2inches)
  • Does well in soft water environment
  • Naturally inhabits areas with very low plant mass/bare environment with a few rocks

The Tank size is - 18x12x12inch

If you do think of something that isn't "Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids", then please share.

Thanks.

Does that mean you want fish that fall under this, or fish that don't. That confused me, i'm probably the only one that it did confuse but hey :)

Is there a particular biotope your creating or just low plant mass areas in general? If you have a particular direction/goal your trying to achieve would help people in finding possibilities for you.

Ideally fish that fall into Cyprinids, Characins and Atherinids. But if you do think of something like a Gourami for instance that fits the bill then please share. That's a fish choice actually, Chocolate Gourami. Not keen on water with lots of tannins though. Less blackwater, more rocky. The hunt goes on!

I'm leaning towards Barbus fasciolatus. I'll have to add some plants like Anubias. Maybe some Bolbitis heudelotii in the corners.
The midground and centre of the tank would probably be comprised of graded gravels and round rocks/pebbles.

have you thought about a school of Paracheirodon simulans, i saw a scape of mainly rocks and grasses with these in and they looked fantastic.

I don't know how you'll take this suggestion. Stickleback? There small, occupy low plant mass areas and can be found in rocky streams/rivers. Don't know how they'd do in a tropical set-up thought. I've always been fond of them and wanted to try keeping them.

I love them, they're fascinating. I may dedicate a tank to them in the future :)
