A few weeks ago I was at a pet store and noticed that several of the tanks had a wedge from an orange floating in them. I asked someone who worked there and he told me that the fish really like citrus so they throw in a piece of orange or lime every once in a while. Anyone else ever seen or heard this? Will bettas eat citrus fruits?

And if anyone is wondering how my fish is doing, he seems to be perfectly fine. The discoloration on his head and back hasn't grown or changed, so I'm thinking it's just a discoloration that I didn't notice before. His coloring on the rest of his body has gotten darker and more vibrant over the last few days and he's become a lot more social. He goes to whatever side of his bowl people are on and his appetite has returned. He does hang out more on the bottom of the bowl now, rather than at the top like he did when I first got him a few months ago. Although, he's been swimming around a lot more, so I'm not too worried.

Not sure about most tropical fish, but I know goldfish like citrus fruit.

some omnivorous fish like fruits, but i doubt that a betta would take much notice. they're pretty much 100% carnivorous.

Well, I decided to give it a shot. I floated a small piece of orange in his bowl to see how he would react. He flared at it, then he went and hid under a plant on the other side of the bowl. So I guess that answers that. I needed to change his water anyway, so I figured it wouldn't hurt anything to try.

My loaches go loopy for orange. I just par boil a wedge, stick a fork in it, drop it in the tank and jump back.

"When good loaches go bad" Next on Fox.

Sorry, just got a great mental image of a hand in the tank with loaches swarming.

My bettas like them actually. I just peel off one of the "slivers" and give that to them every once in a while. Shockingly enough, the calvus eat them too. Sort of. It was just to see what they'd do and they actually went after the slivers. They chewed on them until all the juice was gone then spit out the rest and repeat. Kind of made a mess.

But yeah. My bettas all actually ate orange slivers. ;3

Wow, I didn't know that goldfish liked citrus fruit. That's interesting. I am wondering if Bettas like it, too. I am not going to try it, but still. It's something to wonder about.
