I have always considered fish keeping to be very relaxing and find it a great way to unwind after a stressful day, much better than a lot of the crap on the tv at the moment

I seem to remember reading some time ago about a study which monitored the effects of keeping fish and this found that the people which did keep fish had a much more relaxed attitude and certain harmful chemicals in the body was reduced where as the other group (non fish keepers) had elevated levels of these chemicals and were far more stressed out.

Does anyone else recall reading about this or something similar and do you consider this hobby to be good for you?

I think it's good for me as I spend my money on fish and not just some more useles crap, so yea its good, and it's really relaxing to look at the fish.

With all the post i read i found that most fishkeepers are in a constant panic, lol, sometimes it relaxing, but not when things go wrong.

Yea it certainly is relaxing, but not when I ask my mum to take me to lfs, and she uses that excuse whenewer she want's me to do anything. But I'we managed to solve the problem, and I just say to her if she WOULD WAN'T to take me there, cos otherwise I will use the buss, she can't use that excuse when she wnt's somthing LOL, MUHAHAHA.

i would agree with john 5748, they are relaxing, but a pain in the a***e when things do go wrong, i love keeping fish and are a relaxing way to spend time.
my tank is in my bedroom and is the focal point of it and everyone comments on it when they walk in.

The reason I started this hobby was a suggestion from my GP
to help me with my depression.

I suffer from clinical depression and had hit rock bottom, not wanting to do anything, much less get out of bed.

some of the benifits for me were
1 ) gave me focus
2 ) gave me something to do
3 ) boosted my confidence
4 ) took my mind of the other stuff
5 ) relaxed me
6 ) made me join this forum and become very addicted to it.

I hope you are feeling a lot better since that time, and I for one can say that I am happy you joined this forum as you have given me some very useful advice since I started.

I got the first one for the benefit of my son and myself. He being special needs it does him good to spend time thinking about them and watching them. Myself because I can be stuck in bed half the day sometimes or need to spend alot of time indoors doing very little. I find they help give me a focus where before I'd do anything to not be inside which made me very ill in the end. I take more pride in my home because of them and love having so many personalities to interact with. So yes, they are a big benefit to my mental health, and physical since they prevent me being stupid and going out all day.
Hugs,
P.
