Ooh I'm fairly certain I know it but will let someone else do that. It is a very cute picture. I wish I could have them! Goodnight :)

A small rainbowfish, with laterally compressed body. Several geographically isolated populations are found in New Guinea, Northern Territory, northern Queensland. So far, genetic data separate Melanotaenia maccullochi into three groups, Burtons Creek, Etty Bay and Cape York populations.

I didn't realize there were more than one dwarf species. What kind of &&&& would have thought of the neon variety.
Dreamer, I hope you research all this and it doesn't come directly from your immense brain, if so, your talents would be put to better use in a high-stake quiz show about fishy things!
Not too sure...if this is a compliment or some sort of jab. :p You should try doing some research on my answers.

Since it's been 12 hours, someone else can throw a pic into the ring.

It was a most sincere and respectful compliment, Dreamer. Unreserved apologies if it came across as anything other than that!
Is it some kind of eel tail?

Melanotaenia sexlineata - Fly River Rainbowfish?

Melanotaenia splendida - Eastern Rainbowfish?

Melanotaenia maccullochi - MacCulloch's Rainbowfish?

They are my guesses. All species that I have wanted to keep but never been able to

It's not a Melanotaenia praecox as I've kept them. But it could be any of the ones above from what I remember?

One answer per Post. Which is your answer?

Since when? It's been done on one of my pictures before.

bb1991, they are Polypterus ornatipinnis - Ornate Bichir

Its really simple really. You just start off with something really broad that you believe could be in that family. I just try to find characteristics of a fish i already know with the fish in these pics. Like for example, my picture of the Bichir can be seen as four things, a snakehead, a loach, an eel, or a bichir. Eels don't really have tails like a normal fish does, so you can cut that out. Loaches, are mainly herbivores, the Bichir has a head for a predator. Snakeheads are really close to Bichirs, but its normally not its personality to stick to the bottom. So Bichir is my best bet. I guess you can call it the science of deduction maybe? lol :)

I mainly go off a mixture of this and general knowledge if I've looked at keeping the fish in question before or something out of it's family :)

Or in this case, I knew it because my other half/partner has kept Polypterus delhezi, senegalus and ornatipinnis before XD

Since it kinda seems like we're the only ones that have been posting the majority of pics, i think i'll leave this one to other peeps. I feel bad now

Yeah... I think it's because a lot of the other players are in the USA... I'm in the UK so it's 19:27(07:27pm) here but in the USA it's anywhere from 4-10 hours behind so they could still be at work or even in bed...

I need to refer to my huge info databank (google) for this one...
