I have 6 regular goldfish & 5 are fine but recently the largest & oldest has started spending a lot of time gulping for air. He always does this in the exact same spot next to the filter. It's a 400ltr juwel rio with a ASP400 pump aswell. He's generaly healthy & very active but it's worrying. We've taken all the plants out as they ate them & the others died & we'll replace them tomorow. All the levels are fine so this is confussing. Also will the water treatments neutralise flouride?? as this is being put in our tap water recently.

Check his body for sign of parasites like a gold dusting.
What do his gills look like do they look pale with excess slime or red and inflamed.
Does he looked bloated.
Does he act listless and lethagic.
Does he dart around the tank.
What it look like when he goes to the toilet.
Any red sores or streaking.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
is he still eating.
Any excess slime on his body.
Can he maintain his balance in the water.

Some more question here.
Breathing, opercules, gills
----Gasping, irregular opercular beat, rapid opercular beat (bacteria, dinoflagellates, parasites, toxins)
----Squirting water (parasitic dinoflagellates, gill parasites, gill infection)
----Opercules flared (gill parasites, gill infection, toxin damage to gills, or large gill parasite, as isopod)
----Mouth not closed (usually indicates gill/oxygen problem of some sort, heavy gill infection/infestation;
something caught in buccal cavity or throat = food, substrate, etc)
----Rapid or irregular opercular beat (bacteria, dinoflagellates [free-living or parasitic], toxins,
hyperplasia, parasites )

Waters moving loads, he's very active, gills show no redness, skin looks good, no parisites BUT you mention his poop. Well the last one we saw it was unusually clear. It had some brown bits but it was more clear & thin. I've not seen that before so maybe this could hold the answer.

Long stringy white poo can be constipation, bacterial, internal parasites.
Clear mucas poo can a sign of internal parasites.
Does he look bloated or thin. Is the fish still eating.

I've just fed them now & he's a gutty bugger. Now i've fed them he's searching the bottom constantly. He's not thinned or fattened. Whilst there's food in the tank he's happy.

How old is he.
Check his anus to see if its enlarged or red and inflamed.

Sorry for the delay was on the phone.
So the only two symtoms are gulping and clear poo.
Does it look like he's gasping.
You could try a bacterial med in isolation.
Do you have water stats on hand.

Just gone on read some info on clear poo.
Fish will also heavy breath with a bacterial infection.
What do you feed your fish?

Clear stringy poo can be a sign of not eating well and the fish is running on empty, white can be protozoan activity in the gut (parasites) or bacterial infection.

hi

as said by wilder some of the signs you fish is showing can be bacterial but you say he hangs around the filter return?
this is a sign of lack of oxygen as i said on a previous post warmer temps reduce oxygen levels, as can thunder storms and plants (yes i know plants consume co2 from the pond and put out oxygen during the day but at night the consume oxygen from the water)
you can by a test kit fo oxygen levels
oxygen is essential for the fish, plants and filter bacteria

That was the 1st time we saw a clear poo. I don't have any water stats so i'd have to check everything. When he's taking air it's not like he's desperatly trying to breath but looks more like he's drinking water as in half out half in but not having a gasping mouth. He's ok at present & they're all kind of just chillin. I feed them Nishikoi sinking & bloodworms (their favourite) Daphina & shrimps.

When you said all water levels are ok I assumed you knew the water stats.
I would also try some shelled peas.

Well each time we've tested the water (even at a shop) they're always spot on. He's been fine all day today?? This is a weird one. BTW i tried peas & they didn't like them. They spit them out.

They don't always eat them the first time. Keep trying and remove the uneaten ones.
Some lfs don't always tell the truth so I would invest in some liquid test kits or your own.
