I noticed my filter wasn't always working properly. It's a Rena Filstar (2 I think). Sometimes if you felt the outflow there was nothing coming out until you messed around with the valve on top.

I went to the pet shop yesterday and had my water tested. The ammonia was high (very high). I bought a new filter on the recommendation of the owner (a JAD SP-603E). He sugested running both for about a week and also doing3-4 water changes on alternate days.

I did a water change this morning (about 30%) and also removed some plants as these were going brown and breaking up.
I put the new filter in.

About 2 hours later I noticed a sick neon. Doing the swimming around eratically\upside down thing. Now there are two others doing this. I was literally watching one of my sharks who looked perfectly fine, then suddenly he started doing the same. This has all been in the last hour.

The fish seemed fine before I added the filter, or is it coincidence?

What's going on?

Andy.

Another sharks just gone down.

Sorry, I don't have a kit of my (been meaning to get one).

He did one test. The required level was a light yellow colour. He said to wait 5 minutes. Within about two, the colour had changed to the worst one, a deep red. I'm sorry I know this is fairly pantsy info.

They fish have been fine until I added the new filter. Is this related at all?

Thanks for your help.

Cam't see the filter doing any harm, only the sponges if the had something on them.
I would do a water change.
Ammonia can soon kill a fish.
The fish that swimming upside down probably won't make it sorry, the high ammonia reading took its toll on them.
Can you name all your fish to see if you can add salt.

I have taken the new filter out. Would you recommend putting it back in.

I have sharks, rams, khuli loach, neon and danios.

I have aslo reduced the amount I am feeding them both in quantity and frequency on the advice of the per shop.

Would you do a water change right now? I did one about 12 this afternoon. How much by?

Andy.

Just another 20%.
The sponges in the new filter squeeze some bacteria onto the new sponge off the old sponges and run the new filter again.

The new filter is more powerful than the old and there is no valve to slow down the flow outwards. Wwould this affect the fish at all. Have you heard od the make?

Can you place the old sponges into the new filter.
What make is the filter.
Are the fish struggling to swim with the new filter in the tank.

It's hard to tell if they are struggling because they started to get ill virtually straight away. The danios at the top seem ok and looked to be enjoying it at first.

The rams did clamp their fins and hide under rocks a bit.

It's a JAD SP-603E filter.

I have a 2 foot x 1 foot tank (58 litres).

The new filter sponge is larger than the old.

Cut the old sponges up to fit into the new filter if you can.

Put the old sponges in then with some new ones as well.

There is only one sponge in each. The old one has a hole through the centre. The new one doesn't have this hole.

I have cut the old one into 3 but when you put it in the new filter with new sponge, the water flow out is very low. It also makes a loud vibrating noise.

I have positioned the outflow against the side of the tank, against the glass, so it doesn't go into the tank directly and no fish can get behind and get blasted.

Should I just run both filters in this way?

Sponges with holes I have them was it an eheim.
Yes they won't fit in the fluval, you will just have to squeeze some bacteria off the old sponges then onto the new ones.
Run both filters together.
