Hey guys. Ive been thinking about doing a fish cycle instead of a fishless cycle. Theres going to be plants and maybe 4 neon tetras to start the cycle. I heard if you do a fish cycle ethe water will smell. Is that ture?

No the water should not smell.

Also, tetras are a poor choice for a cycling fish.

NEON tetras are a bad choice, as they're a bit sensitive. But I'd go with zebra danios, or maybe a blackskirt tetra or two.

Are you sure you want to do a fish cycle?

Yes Neon Tetras are the worst choice you could ever choose. The Best Choice ever would be as my choice Goldfish they have good character and they are just like puppy dogs and are very hardy. But thats just my preference if you want to go bigger into fishes and have 4 tanks (like me) or more then go with the danios or tetras. Truely we would need to know what size of tank to know what kind of fish to tell you to get and how many.

Its 29 gallons.

Heres the final stocking plan which fish could i put in first

2 bolivian rams
1 dwarf gouramis
6 neon tetra
6 black neon tetra
6 harlequin rasboras
5 corries
3 Otos

can i just ask why you want to do a fish cycle instead of a fishless?

"I heard if you do a fish cycle ethe water will smell. Is that ture?" - I'm new to fish and don't know a whole lot about them but I do know that I have been doing a fish cycle for atleast a week now and my tanks water has a pretty bad smell to it. idk if all fish cycled tanks have that smell at first but I thought I'd let you know just incase. :X

Im probally going to do a fishless cycle since im in the middle of one right now. But I was just wondering if I had to do a fish cycle which fish would I put in it.

Hardy fish usually used are zebra danios and sometimes platies but the majority of members here would always fishless cycle a new tank if they had no others. Once you have an established tank its really easy to clone as well so you shouldnt have to fishless cycle again after your first tank.

Hi, Couldnt help but reply to this one! the neon tetra thing suprises me ive used Neons b4 to cycle a new aquarium with no problems whatsoever! not to be confused with cardinal tetra of course which are much more sensitive. Ive also found Glowlight Tetra very hardy. Other hardy first fish include white cloud mountain minnos and danios. You shouldnt get any smell from an aquarium ever if you do its probobly Ammonia, Algae (on bracing bars etc.) or spilt fish food inside the lid etc. Introduce 5 or six small tetras to begin and feed sparingly. Monitor ammonia and nitrite levels and add fish on a fortnightly basis if levels are zero! Add a few fish at a time (every fortnight) so as not to encourage ammonia/nitrie spikes! Have you seen the new Tetra product ? safe start! works on the basis that Spirobacter are now regarded as responsible for the conversion of ammonia and nitrite and therefore introducing a live culture allows you to stock your aquarium immediatly!

Have fun

Why would someone cycle a tropical tank with a coldwater fish?

Yes Neon Tetras are the worst choice you could ever choose.
Neon tetras are not the worst fish someone could choose to cycle an aquarium.

i just bought a new tank and because i put fish in before it cycled the filter dosnt remove ammonia so to keep the levels down i have to do daily 20% water changes with a 5 l bucket and the tank is 180l so i think you should add some nutri-cycle(a bacteria which quikens up the cycle) and wait at least a week before adding any fish :fish:
