Fish cruelty at its best... or maybe worst

A lot of you guys will disagree... Which I understand... I think the way stores hold bettas is very cruel BUT they are a store selling stuff... What do you expect? Its for the owner of the fish to provide a good home and while the store is the "owner" of the fish they are busy... I think the center of the problem should be adressed which is not the care of the animals (which does matter very much) but the false/lack of information. Once they start talking anout minimum tank sizes and cycling tanks reasonable people will call them out as hypocrites for saying the truth on how the fish should be cared for... Instead of just family and friends (a small group of people) there will be a ton of people calling them out... So there are two ways to offer live fish services... 1) store them correctly. Or 2) Offer special ordering to pick up fish
Store selling stuff ?????
Come on, these are living creatures.
The store has its own liability to treat living creatures with respect and provide the best possible care (so do the breeder, the wholesaler, etc.....)
A LFS like @OliveFish05 mentioned won't find me on its path, but please come on, keeping them in unfiltered / unheated cups a.s.o. is ridiculous and as mentioned cruelty.

Mind all the "rescuestories" overhere.

Any store selling / keeping them under such cruel conditions isn't worth to be called LFS.
Did you see the PETA vid ? You simply can't say that it is okay cause they are "Store Selling Stuff" and the new owner is the only one that should be concerned to give it a good treatment.

Think this is exact what is going wrong in today's society. "owww it is just Store Selling Stuff" Living animals simply aren't.

Sorry Rocky but you lost me there.

See... I knew someone would disagree

Just so you know, I do think it is wrong how some stores care for animals... But shops can't provide a super healthy ecosystem... They have other things to worry about. So, do I think SOME stores should stop selling some animals? Yes. But you have to reason, these are animals for sale. The store is not expecting to carw for them for a life time... And by the time an animal arrives (like a betta) its most likely already sick...
Seriously hoping I am not the only one.

Uhhhhh sorry Rocky, but I really don't know what you're trying to tell here.
Reason about what ? That living creatures shouldn't be cared for and be treated well ?
Also I completely don't understand your last sentence. Animals arrive sick so it is okay to not care for them or treat them cruel?

You're completely right with that. Worked in a MH Aquatics chain for a bit and I would have estimated maybe 70-80% of all the fish we got in for orders were ill, either minor issues or fatal diseases, then of course also deformities. And then our managers got us to sell them regardless of what they were ailed with.

Poor conditions in fish farms overseas lead to disease in the fish when they first come in, but it is the duty of all pet shops (general shops or specialised fish shops) to care for their livestock regardless of how ill they are. Keeping them in terrible conditions is NOT acceptable just because they were already pre-disposed to illness.

Short : This trade is sick.

How would you feel if it was puppies or kittens being sold in little plastic boxes? Would you still have the same attitude?

there is no hole for air. and they are not in a fish room either. the temp is kinda cool
I've already replied overhere why those bettas are kept in small cases without an opening for air. Because bettas are labyrinth fish that can live in oxygen-poor water and polluted water. Doesn't mean that I agree with how they are kept, btw. And the bettas which are betta splendens are not the most active fish in comparison to other betta species. That's why they keep them in small cases.
This has been done for decades. And in the commercial trade, there's a rule...: If more space is needed, the costs will be higher. Which comes down to a low investment and a higher profit.

This is an old fight that has been going on till this very day... But we all agree that more space for each animal is preferable... But unfortunately, that's not how the commercial world works...

i feel like a lot of people seem to forget that fish ARE actually living creatures. People get sad when their dog or cat or any other mammal dies but their pet fish? "I guess get have to buy another one!"

This is why I don’t support petco or petsmart. I will only buy there fish food and river rocks. I prefer to support lfs that aren’t chains and care about there fish. I have a few that are really nice for larger fish. If your in San Diego area, Aquarium Fish Depot, Petzone, and Aquatic Warehouse.
