My pleco (quite small) keeps going behind my heater despite having about 10 other hiding places. If he is behind it and its on will he be able to feel the heat and move away?

Fish cna get burns off heaters. So check he hasn't burn't himself.
I would advise buying a heater guard.

Also with the cold weather check tank temp.

If it helps I made my own heater guards using the clips for hair rollers. I had a hard time finding heater guards that would fit my heaters that were not a fortune so I made my own.

Oh sounds cool.... have you got any pics?

Yeah give me a couple of minutes and I will up load some.

Ok. That's fine lol.

Here is the link to the hair curlers I used - I got mine off of Ebay though because they were cheaper. I know you are in the UK, so not sure if you could find these exact ones but it will give you an idea.

This is a pic of the heater in my 5 gallon tank, so it only needed two clips, but the larger ones in my 12 and 55 gallon still worked great just needed to use more clips. I then used Zip Ties to hold the clips togethor at the back.

For fry you would probably have to find something that is much finer of a mesh. Not sure where you would find that though. But the pre-made heater guards all seem to have wider holes in them too so I don't think those would work for fry eithor. Here is the link for the heater guards I was looking to purchase origionally, to show you what I mean.

Yeh, i get the idea. Thanks for the link! Good Invention btw...lol! :)

Will look around, Craft Grid wont even work, come to think of it. Hmmmm.... -_-

I wonder if something like this would work - It is called fine insect mesh, only probablem is you may have to order a lot of it.

Oh yes.. this is a uk version http://www.tfmsuperstore.co.uk/product.lasso?product=Garden-Screen-and-Insect-Mesh--1m-wide-per-metre+45912
Might possibly work, i shall look into that. Thanks for the idea! :good:

Oh just had a thought, what about adding the hair curler clips then wrapping the entire thing (clips and heater) with mosquito netting? you can attach the netting with food safe elastics or something simillar. That why you are getting the protection from the clips but preventing the fry from swimming into the grill openings.

Edit: or if you can't find mosqueto netting what about a clean nylon stocking?
