Hey All

thought i'd show off my new tank. i know its nothing special but never the less i'm still proud hehe.

i have a gold fish, 5 black neon tetras and 5 red and black platties :)all good so far, touch wood!

That goldfish will need re homing it grows up to 14-18inches and will eat the other smaller fish. I would increase the number of tetras and platies to 8 each. A pearl, moonlight gourami or a ram would be a better centre piece fish than the goldie.

Nice tank though :D

the goldie shouldnt be in a tropical tank regardless of the size!

my lfs said that the gold fish would be fine but to take it out if it did get too big, so thought i'd gove it a go...

Hi, the tank looks good, and the stocking is good except the goldfish, which will need rehoming. All of the other fish are great.

cheers :good:

Actually goldies can do well in tropical tanks provided they are given proper care and come from genetic stock with a tropical temp disposition.

That one though is 99.9% not from the right genetics as it is an English goldfish and will have organ damage because of the higher temps

LFS lie....

I think I'm right in saying that it will decrease its lifespan though?

I doubt it will be from tropical bred stock if it was from a LFS, and the tank is too small for it anyway.

that's the problem with shops, they give awful advice.

cheers :good:

ok guys, i'll keep and eye on him, i do have another home if need to for hom though...

what is the other possible home like? Is it a pond, or a coldwater tank? if it is a large tank of a pond it will be a much better home for it.

cheers :good:

Well keeping an eye on him won't actually work you have 2 problems:

1) Size - Goldfish grow to the size that allows them to remain comfortable in their environment e.g. a goldfish bowl will never end up with a goldfish growing until its nose and bottom are touching each side of the bowl. A stunted goldfish develops premature organ failure due to an inability to grow to full size and thus the organs cannot reach maximum efficiency

2) The higher temps cause their metabolism to increase which cause them to grow more rapidly which provides poorer quality growth and thus premature organ failure normally of the kidney & liver if memory serves

A goldfish should live 20+years in the right environment.

A 30 gallon long would be perfect for that comet and it just needs filtering no heating bills required you could even skip the filtering if you plant it extensively and light it.

ok like i said i am new to this, and was obviously given the wrong info. i will rehome home him tomo and hope for the best.

thanks for advice guys

No worries harrison not trying to grill you and I am happy you are actively seeking advice on how to care for your new fishy friends.

Fish bowls aren't the proper home for goldfish the rounded glass causes them problems with oxygen exchange and vision think house of horror mirror vision for your entire life. It just happens to be goldfish can put up with a hell of a lot of hardship before becoming a floater. A comet really needs a 30 gallon long to fully grow. White cloud mountain minnows are a good dither fish to add as a tankmate.

yeah sorry if we came accross like its a do or die situation but i try to tell it how it is

good luck with the rest of your fish :good:

everyone i know kept gold fish in thir ponds backhome (south asia).. where temps are over 30+ full time.. and they r the the biggest and fattest goldies i ever seen...

why dont you try a male betta as the ruler of the tank?
