First Fishless Cycle

my fluval U2 has a sponge with 1 grey side and one black..i take it this is a carbon sponge?

forgot about fluvals, yes it will be carbon
ok to leave this in then?...dont tell my i have wasted 44 days!!

yeah i left mine in first time worst case you wasted a carbon pad for you do need it to remove meds but there cheap enough, just treat it as a normal sponge now, it will still home bacteria as normal

I bought Supreme Clean Clear Ammonia. Ingredients are Ammonnium Hydroxide and Surfactant. Is this ok to use?

Surfactant is fine, it's just something they add to stop the ammonia and the water separating in the bottle. It won't do any damage to your tank or cycle

Well, four months later and I am finally starting my cycle(Some setbacks occurred that put off the tank for a while). Before I begin I just want to make shure the filter media is ok to use that I have right now. http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_029V002613148000P?sid=KDx20070926x00003a&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=029V002613148000

The link doesn't work for me. You need to be careful with ammonia that contains surfactant as there are many types and if it's a soap that'll be bad for cycling. Shake the bottle and if it produces bubbles that stay for a good time then I wouldn't use it.

Oh the link worked second time round. That's a carbon filter you don't want that, just a plain sponge.

OK, thank you, good thing I asked. Any sponge for sale at pet store or should I look for anything in articular?

I'm not familiar with that specific filter but yes any sponge that fits will be fine. I suppose you could take the filter along with you to make sure whatever sponge you buy does fit. Doesn't the filter come with media?

It seems odd, they don't do a plain sponge only the carbon sponge. Hopefully someone will be along who actually owns this type of filter and will be able to advise better...or start a new question stating the make and model of filter.

Ya it is weird but I was previously told that while carbon is not good to be used during a cycle it is ok if it is the sponge type, not chemical.

The problem is that at some time in the future you need to remove any carbon and if it's integral to the media you can't do that without taking all the good bacteria with it. So you really don't want carbon in this form while cycling.
