First Ever Betta

I just dug out some 1 gallon vases from the kitchen so I will be using those:)

NO I do not heat my tanks...Is that a problem because my betas do fine not heated.

Well, they MIGHT be okay, but it depends on your room temperature and if it's a constant 74 - 79 ish.
If not, you should consider heating your tanks.
We as humans don't get too bothered, but try and imagine going from extreme cold to extreme heat just because someone opened a door.. it's very uncomfortable and can make them sick.
Small jr heaters from walmart do well in 1 gallons, and only cost less than 5 bucks, I think.
If that's out of the question, you could use a heating pad (You know, for your sore back, or neck) and put it under the vase and leave it on. Get a thermometer so you can monitor their temperature and make sure they're doing well. :)

I live in the middle of the desert...I check there temps every week and they are in the 70 degrees area:)

Well, do they stay at a constant 70? 70 is cold for bettas and will leave them lethargic and open to illness. They need to be at about 74 - 80
you might consider getting an in tank, or stick on thermometer. They're 2.99 at Petsmart.. :) And they let you know if your betta is getting too cold.

I think we might be overwhelming her. :) But yes, one should have all of those things for a happy betta.
1+ gallons, gravel, plants (silk or live, preferably) and a cave or two...
Do try to get some gravel and a fake plant or two in your vase. And you can use anything for a cave, even something as simple as a very clean yogurt cup.. :)

Haha, I wasn't trying to overwhelm her. Just give some friendly advice
