First Casualty

We have just had our first fish death. It was a female platy.

Due to lack of advise from our LFS we had to cycle with fish.
The tank has been cycling for just over 6 weeks,
the ammonia is 0
nitrate is 5 but nitrite is at 2.
I think this is what finally killed the fish.

Should I resist buying another platy, to keep the male happy, till the tank is fully cycled.

Resist!! IMO If one's suffered then why buy more to suffer an proberly die?!?

I agree... I'd wait until the cycle is completely done. Then replace the girlie!
(BTW, what is your plan for stocking? I love to see what people have in their tanks!)

At the moment I now have 1 platy and 4 female guppies

I love livebearers! When you get it straightened out, I'd add 2 girl platies... otherwise the male may harass that one to death. If you have 2, he'll take turns chasing them so neither one will get stressed too badly.
