I think my betta may have fin rot. Here are some pics. I don't know what kind of betta he is. He may be a crown tail and his fins are normal, but I don't think so. Can anyone tell me for sure if he does or not? If he does, how do I treat it? I have MelaFix, but someone told me I should get BetttaFix. Is there a difference between the two? He is all alone in a 5 gallon tank. IMy ph is 6. Ammonia is .25. Nitrite is 0. Nitrate is 40. I just did a water change yesterday and I have a lot of plants. I have no clue what's up with the ph or nitrate.

I give up. It won't let me post bigger pictures so I put the links on instead.

Start off by doing 25% w/cs each day to try and get that ammonia down and see if it improves his fins. You can also put in some aquarium salt and see if that helps :)

I tested the water this morning. The ammonia and nitrites were 0 and nitrate was 40 or so. The ammonia cycled overnight. I did a water change yesterday afternoon around 4. Since my tap water has 2ppm ammonia and my tank had 0, a water change raises my ammonia levels. normally I wait 24 hours after a water change to test again.

Hi, do you have any plastic plants?

sometimes they feel smooth to us but my betta had the same problem removed plastic plants and all was fine. When they try and hide in the plastic plants if they are sharp they cut their fins. This is just my experience. Also make sure their are no other fish stressing him out.

hope this helps.

If I understand it correctly there's a water conditioner called Prime which may be really useful for you because you have ammonia in your water. Prime has something in it which "binds" ammonia for 24-48 hours, this may give your bacteria the extra time it needs in order to process the ammonia while reducing harm to your fish.

I hope someone will correct me if I'm wrong!

He is all shine in a 5 gallon with live pants. I already use prime conditioner.

What do I give him for his fins? Is MelaFix ok or do I need BettaFix?

Have you ruled out fin biting? I can't see any white edges to say fin rot - bettas do sometimes bite their own fins :/

Welp, must be fin rot then - sorry I'm not able to advise on which medication you should use :/

Do water changes and treat with API Malefix should do it. I had a platy male get attacked by tiger barbs. after removing the bars his fins healed well with Malefix.
