Hi,

Can someone tell me a bit more about fin rot? I realise that it rots the fins! But I have a female swordtail whose tail fin has rotted down to nothing within 1 day!

I didn't realise it was so rapid. Besides treating it with medicine which is what I am doing right now, realistically do you think she will live, because her fin has gone down to nothing. Also I have a black tetra whose fin just gets little black or cotton wool type things on... so I'm guessing that fin rot either gets different fish in different ways or there are different types?

Any help would be welcomed!

Thanks
Gloria

Hi~

What other fish do you have in the tank? There may be a possibility of an attack to your swordtail.

I suggest you doing a 30% water change now and 20% every other day, increase the circulation of water and test the water condition (like ammonia, nitrite and nitrate). Adding salt will help the fish to recover, but that depends on what fish you have in the tank.

The swordtail will be in a very vulnerable state, so you'll want to seperate her, like put her in a hospital tank. Besides of her fin disappearing, what other signs are there on her? Like cotton wool stuff? Red streaks along fin edge? Breathing heavily etc?

U can get medications that treat fungus (the cotton wool like stuff on the black neon). But remember to take the carbon out before adding in the medicine.
