hello all,

beginner here thinking about upgrading filtration on 33gal from a aquaclear50 to something better, any ideas on the best way for me to go...thanks

You can never go wrong with a good canister filter. I definitely prefer them to HOBs. Anything rated at least 160 gallons would be fine. Eheims are supposed to be the best but I have 2 Fluvals that have worked perfectly for 2 years.

the canistar filters seem so complicated for a beginner, this is my first tank and im not sure if i would be able to set it up right. would it be that difficult?

just got my first canister for my 2nd tank and its a fluval 204. seemed pretty easy to get going - if your stuck just ask on here I guess, somone will know!

They are pretty straightforward to setup so i wouldn't worry about that. I use both Fluvals and Eheim and have no complaints with either - the Eheim Ecco's are a good budget external filter. :good:

another vote for cannisters, Modern cannister filters aren't hard to set up at all as a lot of models have priming devices (that's filling the filter with water so it can circulate the water in the tank when you turn the power on. If the filter was empty it won't be able to draw water in to start).

As most people will tell you, eheim are a very well respected brand (but they are generally more expensive ). Look at tetratec ex range too. There are very good value for money and very well built too. I got a ex700 from http://fishbitz.co.uk/ couldn't find it cheaper elsewhere.
