Filtration Per Oscar

I think that they can

Ummmm...... What size is your tank?, I dont think a single oscar needs a certain amount but I would recommend a filter rated for 100+ if you were to keep more than one in a 75 gallon
Except 75 gallons isn't big enough for more than one.
I have agree with you, a 75 is only big enough for one, I was just using that as an example
I have read 50 per oscar MIN but thankyou both. Just looking for examples so i know how to/what to filter the other tanks with for when their adults.
Why do people say they need that much space? Is it for them to move? I know they can reach 16"? Or more aggression?
Big fish need big space. And all cichlids, even angelfish, will claim territory, and battle with fish who try to intrude. They can be especially aggressive to others of their species. My cichlids only care about other cichlids. Especially others who share their name. Unfortunately, with a small tank, there just isn't enough territory to claim. in a 75 gallon tank, 2 oscars will always be 2 feet or less away from each other. With 3, there will be almost no space. That's why they need a big tank.

50 gallons per oscar would be an okay rule when keeping 2 or more oscars. That doesn't mean you can keep an oscar in a 50 gallon tank, though. It's kind of like that 5 gallons per discus rule, that's okay when you're keeping 6 or more discus, but that doesn't mean you can keep 1 discus in a 5 gallon tank, or 3 discus in a 15 gallon tank, etc.
Thankyou for the info.
Im quite aware of their size and reputation(i belive overated so far) just wondered why particularly so large. Seems just to be a combination of both factors. Thankyou for sharing your knowlesge and info though mate.
My oscars 3.75",5.5" and 6.25" (smallest one was brought smaller and introduced first)all get along perfect SO FAR but i am definatly ready to deal with any agression or anyone just being left out or becoming timid.
They're not even half their adult size right now. I bet I could throw a small jaguar cichlid in my 37 gallon tank right now, and it would get along with my tetras and small cichlids fine. Give it a few months, and I'd have nothing but a jaguar cichlid in a tank far too small to support its adult size. Oscars are a bit more laid back than other large cichlids, but that doesn't make them a peaceful fish.

Totally agree and as i stated i did research well prior to buying ive just never ever seen a formular for calculation how much filtration you need. I also belive manufacter tank rating bull.... How do they know how well i will stock? Lol
got to admit i love the almost laziness of adult oscars over more active/agressive cichlids. Nearly got a jd but just prefered oscars lol.

Isn't really a formula for it. All you need is to make sure the ammonia and nitrite stay at 0. When you have 1 oscar in a 75 gallon tank, I'd say a 75-100 gallon filter would be fine. If you add more with the oscar, you might need a little more turnover.

Hhhmmm.. Maybe ill just use a fluval 305 on each tank then. Thankyou for you advice mate.

I have a female albino fire oscar in my 100 gallon tank with a GT and a JD + 2 clowns and a a foot long plec I rescued. The bigger Fury grows, the more she is willing to fight for her space and food.

Don't underestimate these guys. I have seen her put my 4 and half inch JD on the floor of the tank and pin him there when he tries to steal food from her.

She is 6 inches of pure POWER. She can pop from one end of the tank to the other in a few seconds.

I run a aquaclear 70, a cascade 1000, a marineland 350, a fluval u3 i think it is called?, a cascade 700, and 2 of the monster powerheads. I'm getting like 400gph turnover. Lots of current, lots of food, really strong, healthy resilient fish.

I kill the powerheads at night so everyone can rest, though.

Gotta love powerheads lol. I use 2 1000lph directed at the filter intake but same as u off at night lol. Ive been looking at ehiem filters the past couple days but not to sure about the price. Might get another tetratec. Does good on my mbuna tank lol.
Cheers for the input.
