I have been finding fish up against the intake of my filter dead with tails shredded. I have watched the tank and none of the others seem to be bullies . The fish are fine the night before but the next day are against the intake dead. Will putting a stocking over the intake work or should I get another type of filter? If so what kind? I'm getting tired of sneaking to my LFS to replace the male guppies so my little girl doesn't know. Last time she found one she started crying.

Size of tank and type/size of filter please. (the filter could be too powerful for the volume of water)

Puttin a stocking over it will stop them getting their tails caught however the stocking will act like an extra filter before it reaches the sponge (if thats what you have). This will get really dirty a probably look distgusting in the end. Is there a level selecter? You could turn the flow down.

Cover the intake with mesh such as ladies tights or hair-net.

It is very rare for a fish to die purely from the filter being too strong. Normally they die from another reason and the body gets sucked onto the filter.

it seems to me that the fish are most likely being killed by some other fish and just get stuck against the filter, my best guess.

I had a black neon once :rip: that absolutely did not want any other neons in the same tank. After going through about 5-6 of them stuck to the intake tube of my filter, I finally gave in to her and let rule the roost with the cories.

I have tule (like fine netting) over the filter intakes of 3 of my tanks. I made simple little drwstring bags after finding a lot of my guppies against or halfway in the filter. It seemed to help, but I'm not sure how many were killed by the filter and how many were dead before it grabbed them, or at least very weak. I hardly think about it now. the mesh baggies were dark green when I made them, but now even after a good rinse they are more of a brownish pink. They do collect a lot of snails and dead leaves after a while.
