Fighters (Bettas) do indeed jump, they are excellent jumpers and use this skill in the wild to move from pool to pool.
Leaving the lid of your Betta's home is likely to end in a dead fish.
Sorry.

i have had my betta for over a year now, and never covered his bowl and he has never jumped out (knock on wood) and so far neither has my red one, do all of them do it?

and i heard a betta fish can stay out of water for an hour? is this true? not something i want to experiment with

they are good out of water for longer than and hour as long as they stay moist, and yess all will jump, i recommend putting a lid on ur bowls.

that is a nice set-up you have for your fih there, he looks happy :)

Oh yeah, they all jump. Fish with shorter fins are more likely to get the distance needed to actually make it out of their tanks, though. I have three uncovered betta bowls with long-finned males in them and none of them have ever jumped in the year or more than I've had them, but I've also had two females jump out of incredibly small holes in their lids that I never thought they would have been able to make it through... lids are best kept on for safety, I think.

one of my betta's has long fins, i mean really long, and he is the one i have had for over a year and hasn't jumped at all, do they need a lot of room to jump out?

No, they can squeeze out of the teeniest little holes...You'd be surprised!

It's most likely the weight of the fins is making him think twice about it ;) Think of wearing a soaking wet wedding dress and trying to jump any height in that! This is not to say he won't/can't jump, it just means he's a bit less likely to take a leap than, say, a plakat. I've had fully-finned males make a break for it before, so it's best to keep an eye (and a lid!) on him all the same.
