I've always been curious...There seems to be a wide variety of tail shapes I see in pet stores for veil tail females...Some are round like mine, others tapered to a point like a spade, still others lopsidedly oval...

This is a girl? Wow! She looks like my short tail guys. Looks like she's wild-type.

There are many members here who have females that they adore, and if you do a search for "female bettas" and browse through the results, I bet you'll find many pics of girlie bettas!

i love the girlies! i love my female communities (at the moment i have 2 community tanks but they are ever-growing...)
i love how when i walk up to the tank they all swim to the front middle because they know i am the all-mighty food distributor! its cool as opposed to just one male whos happy to see you.

i love them all!
gosh i went crazy and bought 7 females the other day...
sometimes walmart has them. sometimes pet supermarket has them (im not sure if thats a chain or not but i know we have 2 here)

that looks like a plakat male. i dont see a little white egg tube neer the stomach area, and it would be able to be seen, as its a dark betta. And females really dont flare. Mine did just once because I addded a snail to here home, and it wasnt any thing like yours. That has got to be a male.

This simply isn't true. Plenty of females flare. My females flare all the time, and they get pretty aggro when they do.

However, wrs is right about the ovipositor - if she doesn't have one of those, she's a he.
