At my local pet shop they have an aquarium with assorted gouramis and a about 3 tiny female bettas. Is this a good idea? If so I may consider getting some females for my new 20 gallon gourami tank. I'm not sure if this is safe since I haven't heard anything about bettas in communuty tanks before.

well, i keep two females in the tank with a gourami. i just turn off the light during the night.

Some gouramies do ok with female bettas (not usualy with male bettas) but, if the gouramies you have are like the golden three-spot in your signature, don't get any bettas. He'll likely kill them or they'll fight back and cause some serious damage. Also, the size of the tank plays a role and whether it's heavily planted, plus, bettas should be kept in a group of at least 4 or just one alone in order to avoid aggression between them. Obviously, this only applies to females. Males should always be kept singly.

If you realy want some female bettas, get a 10 gallon and a group of 4-6 females and keep them seperately like that.

Yup the gold in the pic is one of mine. I won't experiment since I wouldn't want to risk injuries, if I get a female betta I'll probably just put her in a 1/2 gallon like my male betta. Thanks for the help.
