feeding live mice to arro

I feel that this is a serious issue being trivialized by some members of this forum. That video was absolutely sickening and disgusting to whomever did it. Perhaps the fact that these fish "need" live food to live makes them unsuitable pets in the civilized society.

Who in their right mind would want a piranha anyway? Especially a wild caught one who had been snatched from his natural habitat.

Feeding live mammals to anything is a disgusting practice. Its worse than foxhunting.

hah now fox hunting is a totally different matter which i believe should of stayed....my dads going to be shooting alot more foxes in the coming future....

Very very few predatory fish need live foods to be successfully kept and pirahna and arowana's are certainly not ammongst them, both these species can be easily fed with frozen alternatives which usually prove to be better for the fishes health in the long run too.

Personally i find the whole issue of using live fish and mammals as food for any animal quite distastefull and would only feed one of my predatory fish (of which i have many) live food if it was a last resort to keep that fish alive.

Bettamomma should know better than most whether fish "need" live food, I've read about your rescue efforts recently!

I find some people on here quite disturbing individuals.

I bet a cat would like this. After all, if the cat enjoys it, what does it matter what the fish feels?

I bet she would but there's not much chance of her getting 1 of my fish.

Live fish aren't on her menu yet.

A very respectful way of expressing ones perspective.

lol, one could very logically argue "who in their right mind would house a fish whose natural environment is a 100,000+ Gal lake in a 15, 20, 55 or even 100-200 Gallon aquarium." To many this can be seen as abuse. As could keeping a horse in a stable, etc, etc. Thank God we live in the free world where we can make our own decisions (at least I think everyone here does).

The purpose of this forum is to express ones thoughts/experience about fish... not about the mental stability or moral standing of our fellow hobbyists.

I agree much of this thread has become grade school level. Saying "I don't like it so those performing it should be dammed to hell" is very immature or grade school. But don't take light hearted comments wrong. But I do take moral judgments from random individuals personally.

Also, I have yet to read anyone say "that was awesome I'm going to buy piranhas so I can do that!". Instead I see people understanding that video is the extreme of live feeding and then went on to discuss the logic and withdraws to live feedings (except God‘s chosen few who He sent to this chat board to criticize live feedings) . Also note your weak stomach to a natural happening isn't a logical nor moral reason to condemn it.

yeah gross and all that but WOW those piranhas are awesome.
i would like to be the first to post "i'd like to get some so i can do that" but i think the misses would feed me to them first if i buy another tank!! and quite frankly, it looks like it hurts.

Thanks for the Vid. very interesting in a scientific way. and no i'm not a blood loving wierdo and yes i think it's cruel but all the same, WOW

nc_nutcase - wise words mate!!

I finally watched the video, and for some reason it bothered me less than the video of the piranhas eating an oscar did
Anyone who keeps Ps and feeds them live foods that large is just a little... off... if you ask me. I can't see any reason to do that besides wanting to watch the Ps rip something apart.
I saw a video of an oscar vs a mouse once... that one wasn't nearly as bad because the mouse was bite-sized, though.

Who would feed a cat Pual_MTS's fish in his sig? That fish is a 300 dollar fish. I can see the hole thing about the animal suffering but its a mouse, my people put traps in their home to KILL them.

Ok, I watched the video  My first impression was that the piranha were somewhat leary of their food -_- If they really wanted it they wouldn't have let it get away like that. It would have been dead the second it hit the water. Yuck.

Not to mention the bloody mess it would leave for your filter
Gulp and swallow is one thing.

300 UK pound :)

we use plenty of traps and poison aswell. Of course the poison is placed in confined spaces where other animals won't get to.

and depending how the trap catches the mouse it's going to cause most likely a quick death snapping the back but sometimes the mouse will only just get caught and will suffer a longer death.

humane traps are pointless unless you drive the mouse quite a distance away, overwise it's just going to come back to you. Around here there most likely to get eaten by barn owls and kistrels.
