Hello

Set up my 30 gallon tank about 2 months ago and gone through the cycling. 7 days ago got the all clear for the water so added 5 female guppies and last night I found 4 or 5 fry swimming around and hiding in the plants. I did suspect one of the females was pregnant but surprised how quickly I got my first babies.

Decided not to go with a breeding trap and to let nature takes its course and see if they manage to survive, there are plenty of hiding places in my tank and and the other fish comprise of neons and a bristlenose catfish.

Just wondering how often to attempt to feed the fry, was advised that with this being a newish tank not to overfeed and have been feeding every other day - is this now enough and has anybody any tips on how to ensure the fry manage to get there share of the food before the other fish gobble it up?

fry should be fed about 5 times a day fro them to grow nicely. every other day is not enough... there is no sure way to let them get the food unless you seperate them out.
if you are worries about it being a new tank i would give the babies to your local shop, they should take them no worries, which will give ur filter time to pick up, so in a month or so when you got more babies, youll be ready :)

If this is the first time you've kept fish I would suggest to feed them only twice a day it is quite easy to pollute the tank. Put some food among the plant's where the fry are hiding don't worry they will get their share of food when the fry are about two weeks old they should be out of danger of adult's eating them. The fry will be fast and strong enough to get away. After a while the adults will not bother them. When the next brood of fry are born the adults should leave them alone. As long as you have a well planted tank and keep the adults well fed. you will end up hundreds of guppies.

Two weeks is not always accurate. I was surprised to see what some of the adult fish can fit into their mouths.
This is only my opinion and experience with guppies we all keep and breed fish differently. I keep my guppies at a temperature between 66f-72f because they will live longer. So What works for one person doesn't always work for another.

Thank you for your replies. Will feed twice a day and will drop powdered flake among the plants where the fry are hiding.
