Whats the best way of feeding Guppy Fry?....I think I'm gonna get some soon as the females are looking bulky......feeding the fry is a concern for me though....thanks for any help

What a great forum this is.....keep it up.

There's liquid fry food for livebearers in lfs. I fed my frys those for the first 2 weeks, 4 times a day (sounds like taking medicine  ), then i switched to completely crushed flake food, supplimented by liquid fry food once a day.

U can also culture some baby brine shrimps for the frys to feed on too.

Edit: I'm still feeding them with crushed flakes 4 times a day as well, n brine shrimps/bloodworms once-twice a week.

While brine shrimp is hands down the best food for fry, theres other alternatives that work really well. One thing you could use is hard boiled egg yolk. Just take a tiny pinch, mix in a small container of water and add to tank. Dont use alot though, this will foul your water real quick with over feeding. You could also use infusoria. Place a quart of jar filled with water and a piece of lettuce set in the sun a few days until it turns green. A few squirts in the tank a day for the first few days . Liquid fry for livebearers is good also. Use as directed. Next is java moss. Java moss contains micro organisms that fry love to eat. Excellent source of nutrition for tiny fry.

hi I am new here I just had a guppy have 23 babies last night there is a special food in a tube that you can feed them you should be able to get it at your local pet shop but if not you can just crumble up normal flakes to a really fine flake and I mean really fine that is all I am doing. Do you know how to tell when she is going to have her fry?

Thanks for all your repies.
I am new to breeding fish although I have had tropicals for 7+ years. I was have a seperate breeding tank set up but I think my 2 females may have dropped in the night in the original tank as they are a lot thinner today????...I'll get em next time. They must have been preggy when I got them as Ive only had them a week.....but I'll be watching them this time.

I found this link very handy

I have moved my lady guppies to a seperate tank inside a floating plastic breeder....They are sitting on the bottom of it looking sad.....is this normal behaviour????
Bit worried I may loose the fish and /or the fry????

Hi welcome!
i had a femlae guppy and i got her really far into her preg and a day later she started haveing babys but non came out intill the week was up! thats a really long time for my guppy not to eat! well i was at school an i came home to a tank full of babys (13 fry) i cought most of them but 1 and they are in a breeding trap! an its ben a few weeks and the baby i couldnt catch is still ALIVE! BUT when she was finished haveing the babys she got 17 days preg agean but died befor giveing birth agean!

you can tell when the guppy is going to have babys really soon by looking by her anis <(sp?) and looking for a gravid spot that is black or red!

So that's the reason I always tell people not to use those floating breeding net/trap. This would only make the mommy fish stressful!

From what you said, ur guppys' into a lot of stress inside the trap. Sometimes they won't give birth under stressful conditions. U can perhaps place them back to the breeding tank, just make sure there's lots n lots of plants for the frys to hide in. Or let the mommy guppies back to the main tank.

I have found several things to feed fry that work.

Powdered Spirulina is excellent.

Live baby brine shrimp another good choice.

Decapped brine shrimp eggs.

several foods will work hikari first bites, azoo artificial artemia, mike reeds fry food, eggyolk, liquid fry food, powdered flakes, shaved or freeze dried beef heart.

The are many live foods that are also used like micro worms, vinegar eels, etc

For the best growth look for the amount of protien.

A varied diet of live and growth foods is better IMHO.

Anyhow Mike Reeds fry food has given me very good results I also use spirulina powder and live baby brine shrimp. As the fry get alittle older I start feedings of vita pro, growth flakes, freeze dried beef heart, tubifex worms, decapped brine shrimp eggs.
