They were drying their hands after they had them in the water and dropped the towel in the tank. They for some reason squeezed the towel over the fish tank to get rid of the water, and it got cloudy...

I would perform a 40%+ water change and tell them to be careful next time.

What kind of towel was it? A bath towel, a kitchen hand towel, a paper towel, a beach towel? Any idea what ELSE the towel was used for since it’s last wash? I would do a water change and keep an eye on the fish

Do a 75%+ water change and monitor the fish. If they act weird, do a 75% water change every day until they act normal again.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

It may have contained detergent. I find that washing machines, even with an extra rinse programmed in, don't completely remove the detergent from thick cotton things like towels. Try rinsing one in the sink after the washing machine has finished and you'll see how much detergent is still in there.

So yes, a big water change is needed.

It's the fact they wrung the wet towel into the tank which turned the water cloudy which is of concern. Whatever may have been in the towel would have gone into the tank with the water - left over detergent from the washing machine, soap residue, anything else which could have got into the towel (eg my husband uses towels to mop up spillages )

WRUNG OUT THE TOWEL OVER THE TANK!!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Kill them.

Kill them now.

As slowly and as painfully as possible.

To be fair, it's only when his can of beer or lager erupts on the worktop that he grabs the nearest thing which is the towel under the worktop but I wouldn't like to get any of those in my tank.
