Fake Coral Safe?

I bought a fake coral used and brought it home. Not thinking, I boiled it to make it safe for my freshwater tank. When I took it out, it smelled like a chemical. It is dry now and no longer has a smell. How do I know or how can I make sure it is safe for my tank?

Do you know what it's made of?
A lot of materials "off gas" for a while after being produced, boiling may have accelerated the gassing off.

what is it made of?
if you boiled a plastic item it may no longer be safe because heat causes most plastics to leach chemicals in water.
