IDK how different the many species of brains are, but i have a maze brain, and they are mainly filter feeders right? Or do they need actual particles of food?

i'm not saure what type brain I have but it sends out lots of little tentacles to grabs bits of food like brineshrimp.

Yeah most have "sweeper tenacles" that usually come out at night so it is sometimes recommended that u fed when the lights are out but i cant even see those when the lights have been off for 2 hours! Its not even very sticky so it doesnt catch things and like suck them in or anything [the first thing i was thinking it might do since it didnt have tentacles lol]. Maybe it has zooanthellae and filter feeds? I dont know, but i do know that it looks great and its appearance hasnt changed in the 3 weeks ive had it. All my other corals do something when they sense food, or when are hungry they do something so i know to feed them.

Maze brains are the COOLEST! B) Mine eats large mysis shrimp at any time day or night. It gest very fuzzy and feeds whenever I move anything in the tank, or kick up the sand at all.

Yes they r difinitely my favorite of all of them. So yours just gets fuzzy? Thats all mine does but i was under the impression that they all have sweeper tentacles. Is this not true? Does it just suck the food in or is there a mouth that it moves the food to?

The bottom pic was after acclimation and it has filled out nicely since. SH

From what I have seen maze brains can act in many different ways in reference to their sweeper tentacles. I have seen in my own tanks that they usually only use their sweeper tentacles to sting other corals during the night, and don't use them to actually collect food. This is just what I have witnessed in my own tank, not in any way a steadfast behavior or all maze brains.

Yeah thats what ive heard, but ive never even seen anything id call "sweeper tantacles" on mine because i thought they were supposed to be pretty long and mine just gets fuzzy looking at night.

Just about every LPS is capable of sweeper tentacles, they can get VERY long, I've seen them as long as 12 inches, it all depends on if the coral feels threatened, and chooses to use aggressive tactics to secure it's territory. Your brain must feel secure.

Yeah i guess so it doesnt have any aggressive corals near it and it filter feeds well with zooplankton so i dont see anything wrong, i guess i thought there might be because i didnt see the sweepers.

I have had my maze brain for 3 years now and i have never yet seen it produce sweepers at all! Many times i have actually thought it was dead as its not grown very fast either, yet it does have good colour and if you touch it with a baster then it will visibly shrink back into its skeleton.
