I have popped into chat a few times but the people there do not follow The Wolf's netiquette. On every occasion that I have been in no one has even said hello let alone 'spoken' to me. As a newbie to the site and feeling rather nervous about joining in I decided not to bother again.

Who has gotten java from java.com because I don't want any viruses and does anyone know if it leaves a cookie (record that you downloaded it)?

If you are worried about viruses then get an anti-virus program. Also, if you are worried about cookies, then delete them through the internet options.

As an aside, java downloading from java.com contains neither of the above.

I would be far more bothered about using the internet through AOL than from catching viruses from java.com...

Nah, just get a little jigsaw bit and nothing. I expect I'll ask Dan to fix it one day but I lived through my "chat junkie" days a few years ago where I lived in the MSN chatrooms (for those of you old enough...).

Really sorry to hear that charlie. Please do keep in mind that even though there are people in chat, we're not always active. It does happen that we just leave the computer and stay connected. Which means we don't responds =) Also, when it is very busy it's often quite difficult to notice when someone new joins, and you don't always get a hello. Try saying hello yourself next time, if there is typing going on you should really get an answer from someone.

Also, if you join and your nick is Guest please change it to something else so we know who you are. I have noticed people with the nick Guest getting ignored quite often now, simply because we have absolutely no clue who we are talking to. To change your nick simply type /nick Charlie Ofcourse the Charlie can be replaced with absolutely anything you want it to say, as long as it's one word.

And I completely agree with what Wolf said about manners. Just then I missed saying hello to someone even though I am in there. Why? Because I was responding to this thread and the person only stayed on for 1 minute. Please do give us time to respond as well, we don't stare at chat constantly, 'specially when it's not busy.

mIRC

For those that are still having trouble connecting to chat, please concider downloading mIRC. It is a very easy to use program, and it pretty much never fails to connect you to the chat you want to join.

1. Download mIRC it can be found at http://www.mirc.com
2. Load mIRC and fill in the settings under Connect:
- Full Name: Can be anything, don't use your real last name
- Email Address: That too can be anything, up to you if you use your real email address
- NickName: whatever you want it to be
- Alternative NickName: whatever you want it to be, incase the first one is in use already
3. Go to 'Servers' (right under Connect) and fill in the settings there as well:
- IRC Network: All
- IRC Server: Click 'add'
  • Description: FishForums Chat
  • IRC Server: irc.oftc.net
  • Port(s): 6667
  • Group: Can be left blank
  • Password: Can be left blank
- Click 'add' to actually add it to your server list
4. Make sure that under the 'Servers' your IRC Server is now set to FishForums Chat. If so, click 'Connect to Server'. This should left you connect to the correct server fishforums is on, but not to the actual chat yet.
5. Once connected type /join #fishforums

That should have done the trick =)

Now, if you want to join more often, you don't have to fill in the settings again. They will be remembered for next time you join. So all you'll have to do is click 'connect to server' and then type /join #fishforums.
You can however also get rid of the /join #fishforums by adding it in your options list, so you'll join automatically when connected. To do so follow these steps:

1. Open mIRC Options
2. Under 'Connect' go to Options
3. Click the 'perform' button. Make sure to first click the little 'Enable perform on connect' once the tab opens up. Set your network to 'All Networks' and under perform commands you type /join #fishforums Click ok, and this should let you connect to fishforum chat right away every time you click 'connect to server'

Now, I do expect to see some new faces in there! It can be a really nice and busy place, but mostly around evening time (UK Time). During the day with people being at school & work it can lack a little.

Just a note to add to the lovely Erised's post - if anyone has problems using mIRC, please do PM one of us and ask for help.

Or use the chat link to come into chat and then we can help talk you through mIRC. This has worked quite successfully with a few people this week and there will almost always be someone there who can help.

On the Group field above in Erised's email, there have been a couple of people this week that have had problems when not entering anything under group. Please try using 'Quakenet' if this applies to you.

To Charlie - sorry you haven't had a welcome when you've been into chat before. As Erised says, there are times when it's quiet and although we're logged in we may be elsewhere. Someone will always come back every few minutes - we can't stand the thought of missing something - so please do say hello and you will get a reply :D

We will make an effort to speak to anyone who visits, especially if they're new, but it can be a bit busy at times so if you feel you're being ignored it's best to go with the 'Heeeeeellllllllooooooooooo!!!!' option

Used to be on alot after the mods took away teh general chat forum, but then they took the chat away and i haven't been on there since. Plus there always alot of people talking about stuff other than fish, and i couldn't care less for it :D

Used to be on all the time, but I went and got a life.

Arfie

   I hear ya on that one Arfie!

Think I gave away an entire year of my life to live chat. Met some great friends who I still talk with regularly (except for a certain someone who keeps getting infected with viruses :grr: ) but don't have time to hang out for 8+ hours a day anymore.
