my big brother lives in Calgary - don't know if he likes puffer fish tho. ?

If he likes fish tell him to go to Piscies Pet Emporium and watch the puffers play for a little while...he'll get hooked like the rest of us

I dont mean to sound insensitive but.... As much as I like owning fish, I like fishing at a lake. When Im done fishing, I take the fish home and they're dead from being left out of the water. I know you all are going to hate me for this but IMO, if your fish is THAT bad and incurable, AND is dying a slow, possibly painful death, then I suggest you take it out of the tank, put it in a black plastic bag, put the bag on the ground, walk away.... Then come back 30 mins later and throw the bag away.
The fish will die in a few mins after being left out of the water. Even if you put it in the freezer, chances are the fish will die because of no water quicker than it would freeze to death. Look, dont get me wrong; I love all animals BUT sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. I know its hard since you've grown attached to it.
Think of it this way... would your fish rather wait days in pain and stress until its dead or just suffer for a few more minutes and die being left out of the water?

Good luck.

Suffocation is probably better than some forms of euthanasia, I agree, but its still a rather slow, unpleasant death. I think there are better ways of finishing off a fish - why not try the clove oil technique that we discussed? You put the fish in a bag, add some clove oil and wait.

It's also good for toothache, which makes this discussion subject excessively appropriate for me

Some dentists use clove oil too when using local anaesthesia ;)

But, when you have pets, it means you have to take care of them. It also means that you don't let them suffer for no reason. It means when you need to put fish down, you must do it right, without unnecessary pain. Best ways are to use sharp scissors or knife.

Hi - Just a quick question on euthanasia

Just a newbie here so don't gang up on me please :)

But

I have read what you have all said about what to do when the time comes for putting you beloved fish to sleep.

Just on the method of putting in the freezer - do you put them in normal temp tank water in a container and then put the whole thing in the freezer (so in effect fishy is swimming in the freezer until getting colder?)

Just that someone told me the best way - say for example a small fish - is to get a large mug full of freezing water - with maybe ice in - and then dropping the fish from its normal temp straight into freezing water - this would shock the fish immediately and then put it in freezer to freeze properly

Is this wrong  - I just thought it would be v quick

Please give you opinions

my oho i think freezing it is cruel
1 it cuases a slow death
2 extream pain
3 the thought of my fish in the freezer dieing (bcus im killing it )i couldnt handle it

i would personaly have to do it instant with either (removing the head)
or to knock it clean out /then remove the head

can i just ask has it been proven how long it takes for fish to die in a freezer
becuase well reason im asking is i cant see in mine when i close the door so i dont no if the fish will die in 5 secinds or 5 mins

you have to remember even if the fish looks dead it may just be in Extream shock
and can sometimes come back out of it why you should allways remove the head

I agree that I would feel equally as uncomfortable about decapitating or bludgening my fish as I would my cat...I suppose that some people get more attached to furry animals than fish, but I have to say that I agree that the idea of kiling any of my pets makes me feel a little ill...

Having said that I have not got any suggestions to a better way to get rid of them than the ones mentioned previously...freezing them doesn't sound too barbaric, it's what they do with humans diring some heart operations, cool their bodies down so much that they feel nothing and their heart stops, so provided you use enough water, so the fish don't become ice cubes for you're cat's milk, then I don't see the problem.

Each to their own though, I admire anyone who can face killing their own fish for the sake of their feelings, I'm afraid that I'm more selfish and unless the fish has an obvious illness that is untreatable, I'll leave the fish to it's own devices, keeping an eye on it so that when it does die i can fish it out before the others get chance to nibble on it...

just my tuppenceworth... :)
