At the weekend I sadly had to put an end to the suffering of one of my lovely angels. Following some research online, it seemed that the most humane way was to drop her into freezing cold water which I reluctantly did. At least this meant little time out of water, and it was very quick.

Is there any better way?

You can chop there heads off but it wouldn't be something I would want to do. When I was younger I read that putting them in a bag with albas oil then putting them in the freezer is a human way but I don't know if there is any truth to this?

The way I do it is to put the fish in a sandwich bag, then put that bag in a second sandwich bag (as quick as possible)

Then I smash the poor thing against the wall as hard as I can = instant death.

As people have said wrap it in kitchen roll, put it in a bag and hit it over the head with something, make sure its a very quick process though. Very sad when you have to do it but sometimes it just has to be done :/

I've only done it once, but decided best way was to sever the spinal cord. Didn't want to mess up with a scalpel, so used a decent sized, very sharp carving knife that I could put some force through. Not a nice experience for me and I was upset for a few days after but I know that it didn't suffer as the process took milliseconds. Not convinced clove oil, freezing etc is a fast, pain free way for the fish to go as you can't guarantee the fish dies straight away, it's just easier for the owner.

Hammer and chisel, head off, takes no time at all, never had to do it but a friend did and at the time I thought most humane way.

Just a thought but what about hanging, electrocution, intense poisoning, shooting, etc?! .... Just kidding.
All I can say is if I am reincarnated I certainly don't want to be a fish!!!!

I read an article on various methods & how humane they are & the iced water & vodka methods came out on top

I've used the clove oil method. Basically by using the correct amounts of clove oil, you put the fish to sleep and once in that state then overdose with the clove oil. Takes about an hour to do but, from what I've read, it is considered in some quarters to be the most humane way of doing it.

Yeah, one of my danios started to act weird so I did the usual to try and revitalize him as best I could. When he started pine-cone-ing I knew he was done for. :( Ice the water, just so it goes semi-slushy then just plop the little guy in. After 10 seconds or so, once all gill movement has stopped, I added a double measure of gin - just to make sure the deed was done :(

clove oil added gradually to a bucket of tank water is the least likely to cause pain, it is a powerful sedative for fish.

Sandwich bag and a hard tap with something. I use a metal measuring cup  It's quick and you don't have to deal with cutting off heads or really see what you are doing, just make sure to crush their brain.
