Established Coldwater Tank...

Yeah, I agree with those who say don’t clean the filter, except in tank water, unless you want to cycle the tank all over again. A newly cycled tank is not as good as an established tank for the fish. A normal cleaning, water change and a heater is all you need. Then have a look at the fish profiles here and see what kind of fish you would like.

Thanks for all your advice.
How much water do I need to change?
And once I have changed it, do I need to test the water again?
Im off to buy a test kit later.

Change 50% and then test after and if the ammonia is 0 nitrites are 0 and showing the same level of nitrates from the tap then I suggest getting a few fish to keep it cycled within a couple of hours of the goldfish going.
If you cant get any new fish for more than 4 hours then each day feed a little flake to the inlet to keep it ticking over.
Remember to raise the temperature to around 25c for the tropicals first.

I bought some test strips today, forgot to get one for ammonia though.

Nitrate is very high so need to change some water
Nitrite is 0
gh is about 8
kh is about 3
ph is about 7.6 same as what comes out of the tap, is that ok?

So just got ammonia to check for.

Okay... I was told you can do a50% then put some of that water in a bucket. You put your filters in that water while you clean your tank. Then you put them back in when you get it all put back together and dump the old water. This way you keep the good bacteria, but you get rid of all of the nasty stuff from the gold fish. I was also told to clean with plain ,very hot, water. (everything except filters.) Don't clean filters with chlorinated water. That supposedly kills the bacteria.
If you are going to be long getting fish add food as they said earlier.
I hope this helps. It worked for us. (could have been luck too though)

Why does everyone assume a goldfish is carrying diseases all the time? Hes had the fish a long time and so is unlikely to be carrying anything.

yes i had this goldfish in this tank for 2 years and was in a previous tank for 4 years i believe. It was my mums but i cant ask her exactly ow old it is coz she passed away 2 years ago.

It is a very healthy 4 inches long.
