The black thing is a powerhead needs to go on the side to create flow around the rock and turbulance to the surface water.

The other is more of a problem, but for now can be left until everything else is sorted :good: is that the only powerhead?

Think it's a skimmer.

It should all join together. The powerhead thing (the box) goes into the tube, the tube has the cup on top. The cup sits just above the water surface, the powerhead and tube below.

If I'm right, which I may not be, bubbles should go up the tube and froth in the cup.

EDIT: IGNORE ME! SEFFIE's ANSWERED AND KNOWS WHAT IT IS!!

No, you are right....it is probably a skimmer - however lets get the basics sorted for the rock and live stock  :D so use the powerhead for that for now :good:

Leave the plastic thing out for now - lets get some flow around the rock to keep it alive

theres three powerheads altogether, two are ball shaped and ive put one on each side of the tank thought this was one too but the shape threw me off......! just getting it all in the tank now its setteld in its place. rock is in, filter heater and 2 powerheads are in,fish are in, rock is in...my god theres so much life in there, all sorts on the rocks and tons of star fish (long legged kind and the short stumpy armed kinf :)

Live rock is truly amazing - you will sit glued to that tank all night, I guarantee it :good:

So, shopping list for tomorrow - urgent is the salted ro water, you are bound to have kicked up a lot of muck  and as you have live stock will need to keep a very close eye on the stats, so get those test kits

so main priority:

Flow
heat
fresh salted ro water
test kits

How big is the tank?

so back to the skimmer thing, the clear plastic thing im guessing sits out of the water as that is 'clean', so does that sit on the cone shaped end or the other? theres like a bubble making special stone thing (aquamedic?) attached to the airpump, does this go in the tube to make the frothy stuff????

The cone shape thing is probably the collection cup for your 'frothy stuff'

Yes it does

i have test kits for ammonia nitrates nitrites ph etc (have 4xfreshwater tanks..2x700L 1x200L, &x120L and 1x900L indoor pond)

heat is coming up nicely, have flow from three power heads and filter head (so its going in four directions at the moment!)

i have all the stuff to make ro water (have a strange machine thingy here shall photograph that after, also have refractometer, marine salt etc and barrels to make the water.

Cool

Check that the test kits can be used with marine :good:
Excellent, dont let the membrane dry out - get it plumbed in asap :good: put some ball valves on the pure/waste pipes to trap water next to the membrane - the membrane is usually the most expensive thing to replace.

test tomorrow and lets see what we get :good:

So, I would now be going out to buy, water containers and salted ro water - I suspect you are going to need it within a couple of days. You then dont have to panic about setting up the ro unit

The Powerhead doesn't attach I don't think

I think this is for your skimmer :good:

how do i know which is the pure and which is the waste? can i just plump this in under my sink or does it have to be high up or? its just three 'bottles' with tubes and stuff on them....

Well I was going to try and help as finally at my computer (was on my phone earlier) but seffie is such a know it all :p haha! only kidding!

Cant wait to see the pics of the tank :D

Sounds like you have all the equipment needed so whoever looked after the tank must have known what they were doing!
