Thank you all for the help, it gives me a lot to think about. I’ll have to do some troubleshooting and I will try and make some improvements and give it another crack
Wow I had no idea about the water lettuce because I’ve always seen it advertised as it’s own species. Thanks for letting me know! For the meantime I’m cleaning out the tank and moving some plants to a new area until I can set them up properly again. I will most likely get the same colour again from my LFS as it’s very fine for my plants and Cory’sYou have some fast growing surface plants so you will not see "cycling" issues if you use all new sand. And I do recommend this, to avoid any carry-overs. Aquascape the tank, fill it with dechlorinated water, and when you're satisfied add the fish you intend housing. Always add the entire group of a shoaling species at the same time.
BTW, just for your information, there is no plant called "dwarf water lettuce," there is one species, Pistia stratiotes, and it will grow to "x" size solely determined by the environmental conditions. A few years back I had this plant in a couple of tanks and it attained around 3, 4 or 5 inches across. I also tossed a few in the outdoor pond in the summer, and they grew to 8 or 9 inches. Light and nutrients determine the growth. There were only a couple of goldfish in the pond, probably not providing sufficient nutrients to grow larger plants, as the light and CO2 would have been the max. I fed the fish but no plant additives went in the pond.
Great to see some recommendations in the gta! I was at tails and scales last week for the first time and it was an awesome store but haven’t been to shrimp fever yet and have wanted to check them out. My personal favourite is planted aquaria in Oakville but I’ll have to check out shrimpfeverif you drive you can try out tails and scales..they sell nice drift pieces and they're not as expensive as big als which would probably be the closer one to you...
you also have shrimp fever in scarborough which they get some harder to get fish once in a while and it's a family run store
