She said that to you?? What a total hag!
You were definitely in the right, and frankly I'm disgusted she'd be so rude to you for helping her customers out! I mean geez, it's not like you were lying or anything just to make her miss a sale... it was a sale she shouldn't have been trying to make in the first place!

no way!!! if she had let that sale go by, then she would have lost more buisness then making more! because i guess the buyer would neva come back.. DuR
WHAT A cRAP FACE SALESPERSON.. :X

That's disgraceful!! You stopped her from misseling to a customer, and sorry, but no LFS owner can't recgognise an oscar or thinks it grows to 3", she was deliberately lying.
I'd attempt to report her to the trading standards, who problly won't do much, or would you write to your local paper saying what happened? Also, try the RSPCA, also unlikely to actively do much, but at least she will get hassle from as many sources as possible as a result.
That's assuming you don't mond being banned from her shop..!!!

If ever a LFS employee said that to me after lying about a fish to get a sale, I would give them two options:

1. Apologize to me for making threats and vow to stop endangering fish to get a sale.

2. Enjoy the view of me picketing outside of their store on a busy Saturday, distributing information about their unethical practices.

Threats? Two can play that game.

Yup, definately. That was unfair, I'd annoy them even more if you can help it (within reason), give them a lovelly smile when you contradict them :)

She is in direct contradiction of the Pet Shop License which stipulates that a salesperson should endevour to send a fish to the best environment possible.

If she knows what an Oscar is, which ANY fish shop sales person or owner will, then she is in direct breach of her Pet Shop License.

Also check to see if she is a member of OATA. If she is you can report her and this will be revoked.

Don't stop here, be active, help the fishes, not the lining in your LFS owner's pockets.

Ben

Good for you for helping save that oscar from a life of misery

I'd like to point out the the RSPCA have no powers whatsoever in Scotland
you need to contact the SSPCA (Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
Also you might like to contact the local council as it is them that issue licenses to people to sell animals and it is them that have the power to revoke that license.

thanks, that helps alot :) i think i will write a letter to them

do these shops need to sit an exam or do they get questions before allowing them a licence?

i was in this place in Aberdeen (pets at home) and i was asking about things but the girl had no clue... but luckly they have someone who Specialis in fish and he knew what je was talking about. i think that befor a shop may be given a licence they should have staff who are Specialised in the area of animal they are selling?

they may bin the letter or actully do something but either or at least i will know i tried huh.

no basically they pay to have the licence issued, but one of the conditions is they must ensure they do everything in their power to sell responsably.

EDIT
you may wish to point out in your letter
thet fish are covered in The Protection of Animals Acts 1911 - 2000
(not sure the same act applies in Scotland)
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welfare/domestic/#1911

Unfortunately for some utterly ridiculous reason Fish don't appear to be regulated under the Animal Welfare act, and the RSPCA probably won't recognise mis-treatment of fish as animal cruelty.

Would be interesting to hear the RSPCA and the Government's take on this, and what exactly is their reason for not seeing fish as an animal with equal rights as a dog, horse or elephant.

Ben

good on you!

i know where your coming from Boxcar Muzzdogg so many times at work some old fart butts in your conversation and says something totally unexceptable in modern day fish keeping.

Fish are protected under the protection of animals act 1911-2000
here is a copy of an Email i sent to the RSPCA with their reply.
I have put in bold the relevent line

goldfish@fairgrounds
Enquiry:
Hello can you tell me if it is illegal or not to give away goldfish as a prize at fairgrounds here in the UK; if it is can you direct me to the exact legistation stating such and what the general public should do if this pratice is seen.

Response:
Thank you for your enquiry. The RSPCA is opposed to the practice of giving live animals as prizes. The unfortunate goldfish is frequently offered as a prize at fairgrounds and fetes. Sudden fluctuations in water temperature, stress, shock or oxygen starvation are all likely to result in an early death for such fish. Although goldfish do come within the protection afforded by the Protection of Animals Act 1911, it is very difficult to obtain a prosecution on this subject. However, due to public concern, a number of local authorities have made use of the power available to them to prohibit any events on Local Authority land which involves the giving of any live animal as a prize. Therefore, if this gala is being held on Council owned land, you should contact them to report your concerns. People concerned can help by ( A ) boycotting stalls giving goldfish as prizes; ( B ) writing to Local Authorities asking them to ban from their land stalls or events which involve giving animals as prizes; and ( C ) writing to the organisers of the event to express their concern. I hope the above information is of interest to you and thank you again for contacting the Society.
Kind regards RSPCA Enquiries Service
