Emergency, Dying Star Fish Due To Myxazin?

<<SLAP>>

Only kidding lol :p .

LOL well thats me slapped.. off to do some indepth reasearch :)
Some stuff I have read says take out all fish from main tank and raise temp to 85F for 2 weeks and treat with meds, treat all fish before adding back. Also says to isolate all fish for 2 weeks and I would assume that that would be corals too as these can harbour the cysts :( also lots and lots of water changes.
It really seems to be an issue with marine aquariums, and can desimate fish stocks very quickly. I must say other than the odd boubt on neon tetras when new Ive no such problems with tropicals thanks goodness.

Both bits of advice are correct under different circumstances, I should really have pointed that out earlier. Removing the fish is the right option for a reef tank or FOWLR+Inverts, mainly because you can't treat the water with medication without affecting things like starfish and urchins and corals. In a FO tank you can just raise the temps and add medication without fear of killing anything, although it means that you will have hassels removing the copper if at a later stage you decided to go adding inverts or corals etc.

Here, Lee has used a "reef safe" medication and its nearly killed his starfish. Personally though I think quarantining the fish is without question the best option. You break the cycle straight away in the display tank and just have to wait for the tomites to die off. If you treat the fish before they are added to the display tank, then you can virtually illiminate the worry of a whitespot outbreak.

In a reef tank, whitespot will spread much more rapidly due to the temperatures being around the 82f mark anyway.

due to myaxin
2 starfish are now dead
1 cleaner shrimp dead
1 hermit dead

due to whitespot
1 tang dead
in main tank 1 yellow watchman gobie 3 chromis 1sixline wrasse
in qt tank 2 clownfish 1 flame angel

will update later as i am just going out and i am in a rush

Damn that's bad news amigo! Look upon this as a learning experience though.

good news and bad news

bad news flame angel is also dead

good news all other remaining fish are recovering and are doing fine

my change in ways- buy fish from a high rated lfs then qt fish for 2 weeks before introducing into main ,tank never ever use meds in your main tank always qt

also i will be adding my stock list with another 2 more cleaner shrimp 1 fire shrimp that makes 3 cleaner 1 peppermint 1 fireshrimp
i will be getting a new flame angel and a royal grama not sure about getting another tang i am in two minds about that 1 also maybe a little neon gobie as they are haardy and are known for eating some whitespot

so for people starting a marine invest in a qt tank otherwise you will have problems like me and i never rushed my tank i been taking it slow and steady to avoid this ,these problems also got me so stressed there are fist prints in my bedroom door lol so it is always a good idea investing in a qt tank
also look around a number of lfs before you but

we have set up a qt tank putting the tang in at lights out running carbon in both tanks to take out myaxin
1 starfish recovring the other is hanging in thereand hopefully he pulls through
water life are invetsigting the product and our situation and may compensend(is that the righ word lol?)

um for the qt it will have a 10 day course of water lifes cuprazin then 7 days revcoer then going into main tank
the tank is 20 us gall wich is better than nothing right
anything else i should be looking at?

oh also we done a 25 gall waterchange roughly and our skimmer uv and carbon
is takingout the remaning myaxin

I bought a tang with the same problem and my cleaner shrimp jumped all over it cleaning it up I took the tang back to the pet shop the same day but the man at the pet store told me the cleaner shrimp would have taken care of it. next time the petstore will quartine a tang for a week for me. but i have still been too scared to but one

Not sure which post to really ask this question in but thought I would try here first. I hve a fairly immature tank and two weeks ago added a small yellow longhorn cow fish , but I'm not sure if he has contracted white spot or it's his natural complexion. Any clues?

Deb, start your own thread with the question in the fish section :good: more people will read it there

so, on to the cowfish, do you have a photo? and you say your tank is immature, how new and do you have your latest stats available for us?

what is the tank size, stocking etc
