I went into the LFS the other day and they had what "looked" like an elephantnose fish in there. I asked about it and they guys said very confidently that that's not an elephantnose, it's an "Angolan Down-Poker"!! (ps I bought the fish)

Now I've never heard of this Angolan Down-Poker, and Bubba sure looks like the pics of elephantnoses that I've found on the net. Maybe one day I'll take a pic of him when he comes out to see me (he hides in his "cave" most of the time but sometime he can be quite friendly. I  Bubba!

Has anyone ever heard of an Angolan Down-Poker fish???

No i have never heard of that fish and a google search doesnt bring anything up either, a photo would be good.

ASk them for the latin name. If they don't know it, tell them they should, if they do, search for that, and if it is an elephant nose, tell them they're stupid. If not, congrats, you have a fish google knows nothing about.

Well, the only other name I can find is Angolan Elephant nose. So its still a type of elephant nose. Strange, no info (in English) that I can see.

Gadazope very kindly PM'ed me the translation of the above link:

Schooling fish that feels happier in groups. Emits weak electric pulses. The tank should be heavilty planted with lots of hiding places. Doesn't like strong light, looks for places in the shadows. The gravel should be soft and small to enable digging without damaging the snout. Eats mainly live or frozen foods and one of the reasons of failfure is that the fish refuses to eat. No known cases of breeding in a home aquarium

Wow gadazope thank you so much!!! I mean, nothing I didn't really know already but to think that this applies to my particular Bubba (as opposed to all elephant noses) is so cool. But I still have my doubts Bubba is an Angolan Downpoker :dunno: he's just all black... But I love him anyway. Hope he's eating... he looks like he goes for the live black worms I syringe into his spot but I can't think how he'd manage with that big ol snout of his... do they suck it all up like an elephant's trunk and into their mouth?

Hey there fish_a_holic!!

I know what your fish is - I happen to have bought one today.... he's also known as a double-trunk elephant.... notice he has a line down the middle of his trunk making it look like a dolphins muzzle? That's one of the main obvious differences between him and a Peter's....Your's sounds exacly like mine - Mr Flipper - only mine is a little more grey in colour than black...

My LFS said they come in marbled/albino/black/grey, so maybe that pic from google if just of a particularly colourful one?

Glad I know the latin name too now!

How cool are they!?

ARRRRRRRRGHHHHHH! How did I miss this post, nuckfluckchuck???

OK, first of all, I wouldn't take my word for the Latin name bit, who knows where the LFS pulled that one from ;)

Bubba/Mr Flipper is tres, mucho, very very very kewl!!! And you know how they say that they're shy? Well, Bubba likes to chill under his log, but sometimes I'll just be sitting there staring at the tank (like, 23 hours a day  !) and he'll swim right out, check me out, swim back to his log, nose around a little, swim out again to see if I'm still there, etc etc... he loves doing that! I've wrapped up a few light pebbles in a small piece of aluminium foil. Not too heavy so he can nudge it with his nose, but not too light so that it floats. This conducts electricity so he likes to play with it.

OK, now for the exciting part! :kewlpics: Does yours look similar to this:
Bubba!
More Bubba!!
... and Bubba again!!!

(You know what, in real life he looks a velvety greyish-black but now that I look at the pictures he does look more like the Googled pics I've found... must be the photography. Sorry about the streaks in the pics too, this photographic session wasn't planned or I would have cleaned "house" a little! :*) {grrrrr I HATE that gravel! Came with the free 650L tank, shoulda just gone out and got some new beige stuff...}

Yup. That's our Mr Flipper alright. They look like mini dolphins ^_^

We love him. And you're right, they are shy.... our hides most of the time but when he comes out he's very playful and normally plays with our two clown loaches :)

I've got a 100gallon tank coming next week, so I'll have room to purchase more of them once I've cycled it properly.... hehehe. My LFS said that if you keep them in numbers of 4 or more, they are very active fish who aren't afraid to come out... :D

Awwww....

See, I've heard/read so many different things about elephantnoses and "electrical" fish... some sites suggest only one in the tank as they don't like electrical signals emitted by other fish. I've got a 650L but think I'll stick to just Bubba, the others are long gone and sold anyway (can't get any more)

The other day I was aquascaping my tank and he kept coming out and rubbing his body over my hand, LOL!
