Electric fish tank!

I had the same problem and mine was the heater, I purchased two heaters at the same time and they both went electric at the same time, I turned everything off one by one and no matter which heater we turned on we got a shock so I bet thats what it is.

Good luck and be very very carefull as my dads an electrician and he tested the water with his meter thingy and said it was nearly high enough to kill!!!! be very carefull, I wouldnt risk playing about.

Ground fault protector circuit...do you have one? either in the socket you plug into or in the surge protector if you have one? All aquariums should have their electricity plugged into a socket with GFI...this prevents a catastrophic electrical shock/short circuit if water comes into contact with live wires. If you don't, you should install one. Make sure that your check valve is installed in the CORRECT direction. You can remove it and blow thru it...the side where no air blows thru should FACE THE TANK. Obviously, don't contact the water unless every hookup is disconnected especially the heater. This is standard aquarium care. Good luck. SH

We plugged back in the lights and as soon as we did, it shocked us. So it is the lights? I think there is water getting up there someway.

Hi..you still should have the above. Don't fool with it....next shock might not be a good one. BE CAREFUL...I'm a physician and electrical burns are very bad. SH

Maybe mositure has got into the connecting ends or maybe the filter has splashed water into the connectores of the lights i would disconnect the lights and take apart. Maybe some of the coloured wires have crossed over or the earth wire has come loose.

Worth checking.

Are your fish ok???

All of the fish are okay and we found out what was wrong after taking EVERYTHING apart. My mom hooked up the air pump to her little skeleton figure that drinks a bottle of rum and moves around in the tank, and she didn't put a connector valve on it so it was just syphoning the water out of the tank and into the air pump making the 55 gallon an electric chair basically. All of the fish seem to be eating and swimming fine and everything is normal now. Man, don't we feed like a bunch of idiots. :p

Will go pick up a valve tomorrow.
