All of mine are the "Classic" models. The "Pro's" weren't available when I last bought one! The Ecco's weren't either, these appear to be a cheapened down version of the "real" Eheim's - Ive wondered if that was not a marketting mistake - people buy an Eheim for its quality and durability, buy an Ecco, and it's no better then anyone else...

Filling the canister would not put any water into the impellor chamber which is above the canister.
I've never had any problems, good suck to start the siphon, wait until the water has filled the canister, chamber and return pipe, switch on, bit of a shake to get any bubbles out.
